8 Tracks: Balearic Hatemail with Lauer

Music

This Friday, the one and only Lauer returns with his third solo LP Power, the follow-up to 2015's still-excellent Borndom. It's coming out on Running Back, the label run by his Tuff City Kids partner Gerd Janson.

The prolific German producer is a bonafide R$N favourite, and we're happy to report that the new album is easily one of his best offerings to date, full of bubbling bass, sparkling synth hooks and indelible melodies.

For his 8 Tracks playlist, Lauer has chosen the theme "Balearic Hatemail" (no idea, we're just as confused as you). From Soviet synth pop to blissed-out trance bangers, get stuck in below…

Power is out 16th November via Running Back, pre-order it here.

Zeus B. Held / Anselm Spring - Sechs Lange Stunden

I’m a big fan of Zeus B. Held – super elegant productions without sounding slick at all. This is quite a weird one.

  • The Durutti Column - Never Known

I sometimes envy people when they haven’t watched a super good movie/series or have not read a certain book yet. Someone might have felt the same about me, because it was only recently that I discovered the beautiful sound of The Durutti Column. I guess I was always falling for the more obvious Factory Records stuff. Maybe I’m lazy… well, good for me.

  • St. Michael Front - Bootlicking For A Dream

The guitar player in St. Michael Front is a friend of mine. His main occupation is painting. I helped him with some production and in return he painted a portrait of Shep Pettibone in oils for me. It goes without saying that this new project of his is nothing less than legendary.

  • John Maus - The Combine

No need to explain. I’m still hoping to see a concert of his. The last time he played in Frankfurt, he was booked for the opening for Deutsche Bank Towers… and I missed it.

  • Chris & Cosey - Workout

I never had the brain for remembering 10,000 metal bands or dance 12″s like a lot of my friends do. But as mentioned above, there is a positive aspect to this – for example, I discover new stuff like this track on the ‘Exotika’ album… everybody else is just yawning.

  • Revelation - First Power (Dub)

I wish I could make trance records like this.

  • The System - Almost Grown

Reissues are great. Although I often think rare records are rare for a reason. Not the case here. Great band, why wasn’t this HUGE?

  • Alliance - Na Zare

That same guitar player friend introduced me to Russian ’80s pop and boy bands. Hard to find on YouTube for obvious reasons. Been planning to make an edit of this one for a long time now… some day. Big feelings are felt here.
