8 Tracks: Across a Lifetime with Dj Slugo

Music

Thomas Kendricks is a legend. We don't say this lightly.

There are few whom have held a career as fruitful and prolific as the Chicago based dj and producer who has acted as an international ambassador for a sound first built amidst the mean backstreets of the city. Since the mid nineties he has acted as a pioneer for ghettotech and across the years has released on the likes of Other People, Thug Records and Dizzy Tunes. However, it is perhaps his various outings on the infamous longstanding Dance Mania record label which still hold the most respect.

The tail end of last month marked the release of "The Archive" – a compilation of rarities and tracks previously hard to find and treasured. Dj Slugo talks about a lifetime in music and picks eight…

Dj Slugo - Flip Me Over Ft. Mz. Ross Da Boss

This track is meaningful to me because it’s one of the first collaborations I did with a female artist that I was always interested in working with. The dance moves, vibe, and creation all came together so perfectly that it sealed our relationship to work on future projects.

  • Dj Slugo - Flip Me Over Ft. Mz. Ross Da Boss

This track is meaningful to me because it’s one of the first collaborations I did with a female artist that I was always interested in working with. The dance moves, vibe, and creation all came together so perfectly that it sealed our relationship to work on future projects.

  • Dj Slugo - Juke Like Me

This video is meaningful to me because I was able to bring numerous dance groups together to have fun and it was the last video I was able to do with one of my friends that passed away.

  • Dj Slugo - Even Furthur 2018 (Ghetto House/Juke Set)

This one is special because it was the first time I was able to play the Even Furthur Festival that I had been hearing about for years. I also had a great time at this venue and the people treated me so well. Can’t wait to play this event again.

  • Dj Slugo - Wouldn't You Like To Be A Hoe Too (I'M A Hoe)

This video has a unique spot because its one of my biggest records to date. It has been sampled, remade and played by numerous people in the house music world. This track is over 15-years old and still has the same impact on people when they hear it as if I just made it today.

  • Nina Kraviz - Ghetto Kraviz (Official Music Video)

Nina is an incredible person and I like her style when she djs and makes music. Her giving me a chance to remix this track meant so much to me. This is a dope song from a dope artist who I admire a lot. It was definitely a pleasure working on a project with her.

  • Out Here Touchin' Ft. Noah Brooks & Gigi Nixon | Season 2 Ep. 18 | Star

This video is meaningful to me because a record of mine that I made years ago finally got it’s shine and made it to a TV Show, STAR. This was a very epic moment in my career and I’m excited on what’s to come in the future.

  • Dude N Nem - "Watch My Feet" Tvt Records

This is one of the first break out videos to highlight the Chicago Dance scene. It was seen on a international level and it’s still one of my favourite Chicago juke/footwork songs to this day.

  • Dj Slugo - The Co-Sign (Album Release Party)

This especially meaningful to me because its one of the biggest moments of my life because I was able to self-distribute and executive produce my first vinyl all on my own. This is something I wanted to do for a long time and I finally got a chance to actually get it done. And now that The Archive is the follow-up album behind this one, the future is looking real promising for me in the vinyl world!!!
