The Cripples: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix

Music

We here at Ransom Note value the importance of those from the ground up. That's why we use our 'Shine A Light On' mix series to showcase local selectors, up and coming talent and those who might slip beneath the surface of the wider media far too often.

This time around we invite The Cripples, a duo from Greece who are responsible for Odyssia Festival. Across the years they have collected and played music across the country alongside the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Ron Trent and David Morales.

We caught up with them as we showcase their talent behind the wheels of steel. Listen and read the interview below:

"We are The Cripples, Sunshine Pedro & Locke…Two vinyl loving dreamers whose slightly broken bodies have an unbreakable spirit when it comes to sharing pure, booty-shaking sounds on dancefloors around the globe! We are more than Dj's we are connectors, educators and travellers!

We are moving everywhere like the "Tide and Ambotis"…We are following The Sun from the Caribbean sea to the Sunny beaches of Greece till the salty deserts of South Africa!

Our music sounds like "old horns from Chicago & Detroit House with lacings of Disco and all things rhythm!"

Where was the mix recorded?

The Mix was recorded at the mighty Rancho Pepo in the protected biosphere of Sian Ka'an in Mexico alongside our beautiful Caribbean friends.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

As Ziggy Marley said already the ideal setting to listen to the mix is "on a beach in Hawaii".

What should we be wearing?

Your flip flops, a kaftan on your head and your swimming suit (if you are not on a nude beach on a remote island in the Greek coast)

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Actually this is a very timely question for us because we are designing our live streaming dj booth for our festival in Greece, a booth on the rocks on a private beach which we are going to record and stream our special guests along with a closing set from us….

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Our favourite track on the specific mix is the "19th Journey from the latest EP of Phonograph Music"

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

David Mancuso live at the loft NYC. A seven hour live recorded set that travels you without moving, to ambient vibes, to house, techno and new wave to psychedelic rock and disco. The Grandmaster Godfather of all genres makes the crowd scream to his sounds and this is delivered to you from this recording to your ears wherever you are.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

If we could go back…uuufff there is not only one who we could share the booth with him…but for sure we can say Ron Hardy!
We are in love of his sexy, dirty with drive sounds! We have his influence on our sets…we love to make waves from Disco to House, Percussions and Techno of course…Ron used to drive crazy the crowd with his musical waves!

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Back in the days our parents had a duel turntable and a double Sanyo cassette recorder where you could record the turntable and mix them with the cassette. Now we have our unique Bozak rotary mixer (which we bought from a roller disco in NYC) along with the Technique turntables and a cd player.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

For us "intro and outro" are both important! The intro creates the atmosphere…warning the people that somethings happening to the music and the booth. The outro track we love to be a message (mood) for the crowd. It's time to go home and have pleasant time with your lover or leave with the feeling of existence…most important is to leave the place with a smile!

What were the first and last records you bought?

The first record was back in the time of "Pink Floyd – The Wall" and the last one was from Greg Wilson – Summer came my way!

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

That's interesting…we could say it's a dish of Caviar and Tuna Tartar with some super fired bacon slices on the side…hahaha

If it was an animal what would it be?

f it was an animal for sure that it could be a "Jaguar".

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Vangelis – Earth Lovesick Edit is a track that we don't want to mix with something else…It can stand alone in a special moment in our long sets….
listen here and enjoy.

Upcoming in the world of…

Will be good if we can skip this one.

Anything else we need to discuss?

We can discuss many topics but we already talked through many of them… something very important we want to mention is about our Odyssia festival, we do our best to educate our country and show how everything started in our scene, from where the roots come from. The new generation are hitting the dancefloors and this is good but it will be nice for them to know the history! So this is our target…to hang out with the older people who lived those times and deliver to the new generation.
