Shun: The ‘Wednesday Alternative’ Mix

Music

Heavily influenced by acid, EBM and techno, Tokyo-based producer and DJ Shun has carved out an unrelenting sound which piqued our interests after hearing his Steel Garage EP on Arnaud Rebotini's Blackstrobe Records. Timothy Clerkin then enlisted him to remix a track from Type-303's The New Ravelution release in 2018 for Insult To Injury, which was such a corker that he had to get him on board for his first full release this year, an EP entitled Dreamland.

Also a DJ with a long standing career in Tokyo, his sets join the dots between the sounds that influence his productions, from techno and acid to electro and Italo too. It's the latter he's chosen to explore for this week's Wednesday Alternative mix; a celebration of all things Italo…

Please introduce yourself… who are you, where are you, what are you?

A Tokyo-based producer, DJ who mainly produces Acid, EBM and Techno. The artist name Shun comes from my real name. Because there are many artists who call themselves Shun in Japan, my name may not be displayed at the top of the search results, so I regret that I made my artist name Shun. đŸ˜€ My remix for Type-303 was released in March from Insult to Injury and this time I am very excited to release my first original Dreamland EP

Where was the mix recorded?

This mix was recorded in the apartment where I used to live. This DJ set was finished a week before I moved, so I enjoyed playing in an environment surrounded by lots of luggage and cardboard

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

There is no particular need to listen in a special environment, and you may listen on the train after work. The tempo is slower than the mix you make, so please relax and listen. I would be happy if you listened to it for a change

What should we be wearing?

No wave fashion

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

I don't know if this is possible, but sometimes I want to mix on the top of the mountain where there is a sense of freedom

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Normal Sup Edit / Krikor

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Difficult to mention, but I like a mix that has songs from different genres

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

I can say Aphex Twin. He seems to make me discover new things

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

A Traktor PC purchased 10 years ago was my first setup. Since the collection of records has increased, Technics SL-1200 connected to Pioneer's DDJ-RR is my actual set

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

It's better to say that it depends on the mix. However, consistently, at the beginning of the mix I use a very unique song. This is also my statement in the mix

What were the first and last records you bought?

I don't remember the first record I bought. The last record I bought was Billy Cole-Woman. My record collection in Soul, Disco, Italo are gradually increasing, but I don't buy many Techno records

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Italian tomato pasta

If it was an animal what would it be?

A cat. Like my cat

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

I guess all the rap music in my collection

Upcoming in the world of Shun…

The Dreamland EP released via Insult to Injury must be mentioned. The remix by Younger Than Me in the EP is also very high quality. Besides that, a DJ mix with 4-4 vibe and a demo track that I just created the other day will be released soon. The schedule for next year is not yet decided, but we are always making demos, so we want to make sure everyone can get good news again

Anything else we need to discuss?

My base is Tokyo, but if an organizer who wants to call me for an event should contact me, I can go anywhere in the world.
