Moscoman – The Ransom Note Mix + Free Edit D/L

Music

Here comes horseman… aka Moscoman.

With releases on labels including I’m a Cliche – the rather ace lead track Horseman we had the privilige of premiereing last month – Relish and DOBW, and remix work for the likes of Bot’ox and Sr Krebs, Moscoman has quickly become one of our new favourite producers of mighty fine off-kilter electronics.

Hailing from Tel Aviv, where he learned his craft alongside close friends and sometime collaborators, Red Axes, Moscoman is now Berlin based.

We heard a recent mix selection of his and got pretty hot under the collar… so we had to get him round R$N Towers for a bit of Ransom Note Mix action…
1 hour and 44 minutes of greatness. Get this in your ears:

For those unfamiliar with Moscoman, who are you and what do you do?

For those of you unfamiliar with Moscoman, Moscoman used to be a household name in Soviet Germany circa 1982. He was the spy that came from the Middle East, via Romania to Berlin, now he still remains in the freedom of selected fun town of the year Berlin (god knows why) and Moscoman does music mainly. Short films, long walks, and trying to become an aspiring chef (if it's a thing, I just want to be aspiring).

How would you describe your sound?

My sound is pretty much what you hear when you hear my music, if I could describe a sound in words I would be a millionaire or a music writer, I do music, mostly what comes out is, as I call it, "Dance Floor Oriented".

Tell us about the mix you've created – what was your aim when you started?

First of all, I tried to give it all away, to share unreleased music of mine and of my friends because they are also making some amazing stuff. I like to experiment and to do weird stuff, there are a lot of passages of when I purely sat on the synth vibe or just played my 606 and looped it, even an edit came out of it. Plus, some other great stuff both old and new, it's a journey by itself – I hope so at least.

How did you create the mix? What equipment did you use?

Basically in the past I used to do it live, turntable cds, whatever, but now I do it all in the studio. I enjoy it much much more.

So it was Ableton, 606 and some weird synths.

What's the perfect situation to listen to the mix in?

In this kind of winter situation that you and your friends are in the living room drinking wine and wine. Or not and just rocking it out.

What should we be wearing?

Preferably naked, hot and heavy.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

I've got a few, Memhet Aslan – Mechanical Turk (Which I also mixed) the new Khijda (opening) the new CPI, the new BARNT, the edit I did for Chinawoman… It's all rad I think but be the judge yourself. Before the end there a fucking RED AXES GEM, if you don't know Red Axes are like Bret "The HitMan" Hart of today (the best there was, the best there is and the best that will ever be 😉 ).

What's the best mix you've ever heard?

I don't really know what's "best" but the mix I remember the most was the K&D sessions, no doubt. Useless.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

I reckon it's both but I start almost always new and end with and oldie like I have here.

What were the first and last records you bought?

To be honest I'm sure it was some Michael Jackson but I don't remember if it was vinyl. I'm pretty sure my first bought vinyl, and still in my top 5, was Songs Of Love And Hate by Mr Cohen. For the last record, hate to say it but the current market situation brought me to a point where I had to buy my close friends and family my own record when I came to visit. Go Dark Horse!

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

If it was edible I'm sure it was a pretty fucking good meal. Middle Eastern meeting Southern European cuisine with great drinks from North Europe and some fries, of course, or chips, or whatever you Englanders call it today. We just call it pommes. Damn. That sounds good. Let's work on that next time? Instead of mixes lets build menus and I'll DJ and cook.

If it was an animal what would it be?

Not a horse, a majestic lion sitting in the wilderness waiting for the lioness to come home with dinner.

Where should we be going to hear new music?

First of all you should come to my Facebook page and Soundcloud, other than that I'm not gonna shout all about 'support the vinyl',  just don't buy what everybody says. Even the underground is mainstream today, it raises the prices and everybody plays the same music. I go to Youtube to listen to music – the amount there isn't even something i can grasp.

Have you ever made music in a stable?

Shit, now I want to make some there, with a piece of hay in my mouth. What did the horsie said when he went into a gay bar? Hay-hay! Sorry…

Which horse from history is your favourite? (Fictional horses are allowed)

I think Cochise, it was a nice little horse, Little John's horse from Bonanza. I miss Michael Landon, RIP! Good times.

How do you like to be groomed?

All about the groomed, I'm full bushed, upstairs and downstairs, working on this new Lumbersexual shit! Used to have a real horse like pony (90s style) was known as the mosco, but it's gone now.

Have you ever ridden a horse? If so, what was it like? Did you feel the wind in your hair?

Actually I haven't ridden a horse yet, stupid me. I'll do it and let you know but if it's as people say I'm in for a treat!

Why horses? Have you ever considered pigs? (They're very clean animals!)

Pigs are not Kosher, also I'm a vegan.

I’m a cat man myself, if you tell me you don’t like cats I think we have a problem. Well, do you?! Hmmm? Do you?!

Cats are the best they can be but I wouldn't take a cat for an expedition in the wilderness, not just yet!

Complete the sentence: I'm proper techno because…

I Live in techno Hollywood (copyright Paramida).

When did you last stick your head in a bass bin?

Wow! It's been a while sadly, maybe 7 years.

Are you a kick drum, hi hat or a snare? And why?

I guess I'm a snare, I like to show people what they should do. It needs much more elaborating but I don't have all night, got to get my new music ready! But you get it, think what the snares does really. And it's funky.

Upcoming in the world…

I'm sure the Japanese are going to invent drugs you can control with your iPhone! iKETA (if it happens I want copyright for the name!)

Anything else we need to discuss?

I have some cool music coming out in the near future but I can't and don't really want to discuss it.

Classical music is still the best, there's nothing new anybody is doing that can surprise but surprises are not good for your face anyway, so let's just enjoy what we have.

Anything you'd like to add?

I would like to add that I've never played in the UK, that's it pretty much. Hope you had as nice a time reading as I had writing, I even listened again to the mix while I was writing, it took me 40 minutes! Now I'm listening to a DJ sotofett track, sorry it's so long but: 1. There's no way to get out of it, and 2. It's not long enough, I just want more and more of it!

All hail the horseman!

Catch me later!
