Moonboots ‘One March Morning’ Mix

Music

Moonboots provides us with this week's Ransom Note Mix. Here, Musica Noche trio Neil Thornton, Adrian Spurdon and Russell Penn give Moonboots the introduction he deserves before we crack on with a few questions about the mix;

Moonboots has been at the helm of Manchester institution, Aficionado, for 15 years and counting. A Sunday night session devoted to the musical miracles which many overlook, he has consistently championed an endless list of lost classics and new delights. It's the very definition of Balearic, without genre or agenda

If he was ever to appear on Mastermind, there's a good chance that Moonboots might include German Orthopaedic Footwear, Metro Maps Of The World, Meat, or Moleskin Notepads as his chosen specialised subjects because they all float his boat but, as we all know, he's mostly about the music.

And that can be anything at all. Before the long-running Aficionado night started, Moon sold records at the Eastern Bloc shop in Manchester and prior to that he was working the lights at Most Excellent and Glitterbaby.  The Aficionado night that he runs alongside Jason Boardman has also spawned it's own record label, now in it's third year and responsible for some of the finest jazz-donk releases known to mankind. We're chuffed to have him coming to play at Musica Noche.

Where was the mix recorded?

Alphonsus Road, Old Trafford on a chilly March morning a few years back.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

On top of Helvellyn.

What should we be wearing?

Knitted long johns and a cagoule.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix?

Personally I find doing home mixes really tedious. I much prefer a live recording. I played at the Garden Bar in Zadar last summer and that was as perfect as any for location. Top space.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

July Skies – The Softest Kisses

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Probably one of José Padilla's old Cafe del Mar tapes. They're all numbered but I can never remember which one is which. Let's just say #1.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Kenny Everett. Proto-Balearic legend.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Never had a set up at home. Just have one old Technics deck.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Always the first. Start as you mean to go on.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First was Duran Duran – Rio. Last was the latest Dan Lissvik 12"

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Battenburg Cake

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Chris Fantasy – Fighting the wind (rap version)
