Michael Davies has cut his teeth since the tender age of 14 behind the decks, a keen turntablist from a young age he has since evolved upon a musical voyage of discovery which has led him to London in the present. As a regular at Spiritland he has showcased his keen talent behind the booth in as much as a selector as a dj. He channels a broad remit of music which spans across ambient, soul, funk, disco and beyond - wide reaching and intriguing he prefers the long haul to the short sprint, something of which we are very much a fan.
We are delighted to welcome him to contribute tour our Monday series, a mixtape project which showcases the eclectic realm of dance, electronic, ambient and whatever else has taken the mood.
Listen and read the interview below:
Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?
My name is Michael, my best friend called me miche, i didn't like it so I kept it!
Where was the mix recorded?
The mix was recorded through the best soundsystem in the world, the Spiritland system in kings cross. I became a resident earlier this year and have loved every session.
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
In the bath.
What should we be wearing?
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
Where I recorded this mix! (or maybe at kasheme!) Spiritland, custom isonoe mixer, mostly records (mostly!)
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
The pablo color stuff at the start but the arnold blair has a special place (this week!)
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
Probably the your a melody mixes online, or my friend Micky Browne always kills it whenever he puts something together!
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
Probably Kerri Chandler, playing a radio show aged 14 with 9 out of 10 songs being his was a great memory. I was obsessed!
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
I learnt on technics, I recently moved to London so I only have one deck set up and it's really nice to work my way through albums!
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
What were the first and last records you bought?
The first record I bought was a split 10 by two local bands called Kerouac and the long haul... I'm not so much into metal anymore but I still could never get rid of it! The last record I bought was "this is my year" by Rochelle Rabouin. Not cheap but exceptional modern soul and much more my thing these days.
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
Manuka honey, sweet and good for your health.
If it was an animal what would it be?
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
Everything can be mixed. Everything will be mixed.
Upcoming in the world of…
I've just taken on a job at Spiritland so I'll be working super hard there and focusing on that.
Anything else we need to discuss?
Peace love and unity. Love is the message and love is everywhere.
