John Daly: The Ransom Note Mix

Music

House and techno DJ and producer John Daly has been releasing records for over ten years, primarily on his own Feel Music label, but has also seen his work feature on Drumpoet, Secretsundaze and One Track Records. The Galway based artist also releases under the moniker The Smoke Clears, an ambient project whose debut album was released to acclaim last year. He's provided this week's Ransom Note mix here for us, and a few answers to some questions…

Who are you, where are you and what are you?

John Daly. Galway, Ireland. Vessel.

What does your music sound like?

It sounds amazing.

You are now in a position in which you fall into the ‘experienced producer’ category. How has your sound evolved throughout the years?

It's always evolving, sometimes not in a good way either.

Have you struggled to maintain momentum or generate ideas at any point throughout your career?

All the time, right now in fact.

What are you looking for when signing a release to Feel Music?

From now on I will be the only artist on Feel Music. I don't want to be that guy who signs peoples tracks and sits on them for ages. I've been that guy and it sucks.

Of which record are you most proud to have released, either independently or on the label?

My last album, THE SMOKE CLEARS on All City Records.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Anywhere.

What should we be wearing?

Whatever is comfortable.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

The first one, love that Mike Dunn sound.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

That's hard, but for now I'd say Theo Parrish 'These Days And Times'. Or the Francois K Essential Mix CD.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

David Mancuso I guess, but it would have to be in the Seventies.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

It was 2 Technics and a Vestax mixer. Now it's some plastic digital shit. But hey it is what it is.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The start always. You have to announce yourself.

What were the first and last records you bought?

The Hits album one was the first. The most recent was Earth Volume 2. I love the metal.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Some kind of luxury ice cream.

If it was an animal what would it be?

My dog.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

I can mix anything.

Anything else we need to discuss?

Lots, but we don't have time.
