Black Booby: Flavour Of The Label Mix

Music

Black Booby, well, yes, it's a funny name. However, it is also the name of a very exciting record label which has been delivering some very intersting edits and releases since back in 2012. Run by Richard Rogers, the label has featured the likes of Ashley Beedle, Gene Hunt, Jordan Fields and more. These records have since been endorsed by the likes of Moodymann, Ptaki, Detroit Swindle and more. This is a label all about character, personality, soul and fun and this is certainly expressed in both the interview and mix below:

Where was the mix recorded?

The New BB HQ in Margate, UK with the Sea rolling on in. Bliss.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

In a small , stuffy, dark room with close friends and neighbours.

What should we be wearing?

As little as possible hopefully.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: location, system, format?

The Soundshaft London, Klipschorn, vinyl.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

I edited a lot down for the mix so it would be favouritism for me to single one out, I love them all but at the moment just about anything on Apron, love that shit.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Derrick May – The Mayday Mix (very close 2nd, Derrick Carter – Many shades of Cajual, Both equally amazing club music masterclasses)

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Ron Hardy, Play what you feel and play it loud and clear, its not always about the f*cking mix!

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Then – 2 x Citronic CS 300D belt, 500Al Stanton Stylus,Realistic Console Mixer 32-1200B.
Now – 2 x 1210 MK5, TARUYA White Stylus, Isonoe Prototype Rotary, Macbook Pro with Apogee DAC and Traktor Scratch hooked in for WAV playback on exclusive edits/effects.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

If you've done the job properly the one you end on surely, make it last forever.

What were the first and last records you bought?

1st – Breakdance – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack LP – Woolworths in Lewisham (Stolen)
Last – Kyle Hall 'Joy' LP Ed Davis/ Discogs (Paid For)

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

A well balanced Octopus ceviche, Tangy and fresh with a fishy bottom end.

If it was an animal what would it be?

Clyde from 'Every Which Way but Loose' Left hand music for right hand turns.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything…

Usually anything I make, Oh Apron releases are usually also a joy to mix…

Upcoming in the world of…

Finally put a name/face to the label and done a lovely big interview for Groove Mag in Berlin, NYC in April, East Village radio with the splendid Chris
Tarantino and a small intimate secret gig also Plus LOTS of new upcoming BB 12's for ya wrekka box, Got some biggies ready to bounce!

Anything else we need to discuss…

I want to play on that Ransom Note boat, I never seen/heard so many people screaming as your boat come inshore in Croatia last year.
