Insomnia Music with Hoshina Anniversary

Music

Tokyo-based producer Hoshina Anniversary first piqued our interests with his Safe Trip release Hakkenden; that mindbending one Lena Willikens had been showing some love in her sets last summer.

Shunning the conventional, Hoshina Anniversary's productions fuse tradition and innovation to craft a singular sound that has recently caught the attention of Alien Jams boss Chloe Frieda. His third album, the experimental and intricate Odoriko, marks his debut on the London-based label and follows a large catalogue of releases on ESP Institute, MUSAR, Boysnoize and Youth.

Here he ponders the music that keeps his mind occupied during the midnight hours…

"I chose this theme because I have a collection of albums for Insomnia. I've listened to these five tracks for a long time, and from now on I'm gonna listen to these albums. I hope you'll spend quality time with this music."

Dominic Miller – In A Whisper

Ravel – Gaspard De La Nuit: I. Ondine (Piano by Robert Casadesus)

Dave Pike – Philumba

Jimmy Raney – Ovals

Francoise Hardy ‎– Message Personnel

Dominic Miller - In A Whisper

This track has an exquisite sense of distance… One by one another chord progression or the sound (strings, bass etc) appear and disappear, it repeats again. It doesn’t assert something strong, but it stay close to me, calms my mind.
The scene spreads, and it seems to last forever.

  • Ravel - Gaspard De La Nuit: I. Ondine (Piano By Robert Casadesus)

Robert Cassadesus’ piano shows a misty and sweet sound; like a bubble it will fleetingly disappear. It’s intellectual but at the same time innocent. Involving all of them, he played it very dramatically. This track is one of the most beautiful compositions by Ravel.

  • Dave Pike - Philumba

At first glance, it’s ordinary bossa nova and jazz, but this is a timeless masterpiece by Joao Donato. A bit of a strange composition with Dave Pike & Kenny Burrell’s flavouring & José Paulo’s cabasa sound. It’s made prestigious and politely, but this music never.

  • Jimmy Raney - Ovals

I often listen to drumless jazz tracks when I can’t sleep.
Jimmy Raney’s guitar sound is based on bebop and has high quality lyrical taste.
With his unique composition and two masters, Tommy Flanagan and George Mraz, he broke a new ground of Jazz.

  • Francoise Hardy ?– Message Personnel

Her songs have a subtle emotion and casual happiness that is difficult to find recently. It resembles Michelangelo Antonioni’s 60s movies.
