Tonga (Mike Skinner & Murkage)

Music

Tonga, the night started by Mike Skinner and Murkage Dave, is celebrating its first birthday – and in some style. As well as a party at The Waiting Room, and a bonkers birthday mix, the Tonga Balloon Gang have released a three-track EP, with guest appearances from grime MCs Big Narstie and Jammer (as well as regulars Gaika, Oscar #worldpeace, Klepto and DJ Smith).

We spoke to the ever-amusing Mike and Dave about the tracks that influenced the EP.

I'M On One (Explicit Version)

All we care about is money and the city that we’re from. DJ Khaled is like our Apostle Paul. The scales have fallen from our eyes and now we see clearly. Another one.

  • Skepta - Stageshow Rhythm (Stageshow Ep Admnt 007)

Still to this day one of the most futuristic instrumentals ever. Literally the sound of getting shanked at carnival. Fun fact: Mike can never say the word ‘riddim’ he always has to say ‘rhythm’.

  • Young Steff - Slow Jukin

Young Steff. Very underrated. Very rare. The dance he does to the chorus is incredible.

  • Jaheim - Fabulous (Official Video)

Jaheim is an artist who unites the whole Tonga Balloon Gang. Somewhat facially challenged but his voice more that makes up for that.

  • Burga Boy - Showski Wowski

King Burga. He used to link one peng ting we knew from Manny. Salute. He makes gospel now but this is still such a banger, shells the dance every time.

  • Loyal Flames - Keep Focus (Official Hd Video)

We met this guy when we were out in Jamaica last. Hang tight Viking Productions. Viking gave us a CD and we battered this tune for the rest of the trip. Uplifting.

  • Marc Nelson - 15 Minutes

Murkage Dave used this record to seduce many an asian babe during his uni years. It’s taken from an album called Chocolate Mood. Need we say more?

  • Terror Danjah Ft (Riko,Bruza D Double E,Hyper) - Cock Back

A ‘Non-Positive Sundays’ staple. The beat mate is entirely from gun related sounds. Favourite lyric “I will change your boat like Michael Jackson”
