INFLUENCES: Skee Mask

Music

The Ilian Tape imprint from the Zenker Brothers has been putting out release after release of high quality techno for the past couple of years now. As a mark of the maturing of the label they’ve begun branching out into longer format releases. Following up from the excellent debut LP from the brothers, they’ve just dropped a fantastic long player from long time collaborator Skee Mask. After a string of excellent 12”s for the label, this album really pushes his sound. And, with Shred just touching down in the shops, what better time to catch up with him and delve into the music that has made him the artist he is today.

Marcberg (Album)

He’s one of my favourite rappers, i listen to his music everyday, basically everything he puts out is amazing. His tracks always create a very relaxed vibe, also quite soulful, but not too cheesy. I love the simplicity of his beats (sometimes produced by himself) and the smooth way that he raps.

  • Billy Nightmare - Malfunktion (Organized Confuzion - Gigolo - 2004)

This is an album full of banging rhythms and deep retroish synths, it has a highly vivid vibe. All the tracks sound like sick live jams, super raw and a bit “old-chicago-houseish” in an EBM way. I found this one when i checked out all the stuff from Jamal Moss on discogs, he inspires me a lot.

  • Rhythm & Sound - Carrier

One of my all-time favourites, these guys are the dons! For me this is the best dub album, every track sounds perfect and always calms you down. Their labels Basic Channel and Chain Reaction influenced me a lot, all the releases sound very classy and well-conceived.

  • Quasimoto - The Unseen (Full Album)

This is such a classic… One of the very few albums i can listen to without skipping a track, it’s such a good journey through so many samples. You just can’t go wrong with Madlib, he’s a genius. A couple months ago i discovered one of his many projects called “DJ Rels”, it’s more up-tempo stuff and sounds a little bit like house music, but in a uncompromising way. If you haven’t checked it out yet you should do it asap!!

  • Shed - Keep Time

Also a big inspiration for me, still can’t believe that all of his tracks are produced digitally, their sound is so warm & organic. The diversity of styles in this album is incredible and of course it sounds timeless but kind of futuristic, too. I also admire his character, he’s very strict with his work and treats his “online presence” (twitter etc) with concernment.

  • William Basinski - Cascade (2015)

It’s absolutely repetitive and goes on for over half an hour but i’m really addicted to this album / track, it sounds very melancholic and woozy. Truly a masterpiece from Basinski. His works are very inspiring for me.

  • Gas - Königsforst (1999) [Full Album]

All the Gas stuff is pure class and I’m a big fan of his label Profan, it has it’s own vibe and sounds pretty inventive. Some of the tracks which he puts out under his real name are not really my taste tho, but his whole output and approach on music is admirable.

  • Autechre - Lp5 - Corc

My favourite Autechre album at the moment, they put out so much LPs that i love, but this is one of their albums that are quite experimental (as always) but combined with fantastic harmonies. For me it’s an outstanding classic.

  • Vatican Shadow - Atta's Apartment Slated For Demolition (Bouthayna Engineering)

I have to name this EP, it absolutely sounds perfect. Every track on it has it’s own aggression, but it’s never too hard, because the mixture between the drums (mostly distorted) and the melodies fits exactly. Also sounds great on a good soundsystem, I play it very often

  • Obsolete Music Technology - My Neurosis

As i mentioned before, Jamal Moss is a big inspiration for me and this is one of my favourite remixes from him. It doesn’t have a lot of effects or progression in it, just a dope 707 groove and a cool synth line, but that’s why i like it. He proves me that you sometimes only need 2 elements to make a fresh and addictive track
