Jaakko Eino Kalevi Influences

Music

Already something of a cult figure in Helsinki, where he used to live and work part-time as a tram driver, Jaakko is now making quite a name for himself in much further reaches of the world. Now residing in Berlin, Jaakko is an alluring and charismatic artist whose softly psychedelic pop blends funk, folk and disco in an intriguing and highly satisfying manner. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist who is happiest behind the drums, Jaakko plays, sings and produces all his own material.

We premiered Manfredas' excellent remix of his No End single a few weeks back. Check that here.

His much lauded 'Dreamzone EP' for Weird World/Domino came out late last year and his most recent output, the 'Yin Yang Theatre' EP, has been licensed by Mr Goldsworthy for his Beats In Space imprint where the great Speak Out has found a home and is being released next week. His next full album drops in January on WW/Domino.

He's struck a chord with us basically so we had to ask him to put us together the tracks that have influenced his sound… and you can read all about and listen to them up above. It's called Influences, you might have seen a few others on these pages.

A little more info on Jaakko can be found here

Listen to Speak Out here…

Gigolo Tony Can't Nobody Love You Like I Do

Such a touching song with a great story and a smooth rhythm. Kind of like a prototype of R.Kelly’s “Trapped In a Closet”. Big emotions.

  • Nina Hagen Live - Dread Love - Paris 1980

One of my favourite Nina Hagen songs. A different kind of love song. The chorus is so catchy it´s retarded.

  • Yoko Ono - Walking On Thin Ice

I like Yoko Ono´s freedom. She seems to have a good distance to what she is doing.

  • Video Freak ( Defend It ) - Prince Charles & The City Beat Band 1982 Rare Funk

This song is so interesting. I originally got it from my father’s record collection. Some kind of arcade anthem, I guess. They have caught the threatening feeling very well.

  • Only Tomorrow - M B V - My Bloody Valentine

I always thought My Bloody Valentine was some kind of a rap metal band but then I heard this new album and got really hooked.

  • Ramones - Baby, I Love You(Complete)

This is also from my father’s record collection. Might be his brother’s though. I think Ramones is like The Beatles of punk. What a perfect thought to combine Ramones and girly pop.

  • Chris & Cosey - October Love Song

I love this song. The chorus is so ecstatic. Like being in a hurry in a good way.

  • Evil Pimp - Ridin Thru The Hood

A perfect track for riding through the hood. I think I will make a Finnish version of this one day.
