Influences: Walton

Music

Manchester producer Walton – who's previously released on the likes of Keysound and Kaizen – has got a new album out next month on Tectonic. Spoiler alert: it's pretty great. Featuring collaborations with Riko Dan and Wen, Black Lotus is home to a spacious and futuristic mix of grime, dubstep, techno and abstract electronics.

Influenced by his love of sino grime (a term originally popularised by a Kode9 mix from 2005), Walton began listening to traditional Japanese and Chinese music while searching for melodic ideas. Dig further into his Influences playlist below to find out more…

Black Lotus is out 6th July via Tectonic, pre-order it here.

Shogun Assassin Ost - Legend Of The Lone Wolf

Sick film and a sick soundtrack that had a big influence on how the LP ended up sounding. Love the brass sounds on this one.

  • Shogun Assassin Ost - Legend Of The Lone Wolf

Sick film and a sick soundtrack that had a big influence on how the LP ended up sounding. Love the brass sounds on this one.

  • Japan Blues - Stoned Bird

Heavy, heavy drums and percussion. Stomper!

  • Jammer - N.A.S.T.Y.

Big sino grime tune from 2003.

  • Pinch & Mumdance - Double Barrelled Mitzi

Love this tune and have been playing it most sets since it dropped. Made me want to use a lot of zap/laser sounds in my music.

  • Dizzee Rascal - Brand New Day

Classic from the first album I ever bought. Another sick example of that oriental influenced grime.

  • Dizzee Rascal - Brand New Day (Live Version)

Check out the live version of this as well… I hadn’t seen it until a few weeks back when I saw Oneman post it on his Twitter. Blew my mind how they recreated it live.

  • Randomer - Juju

I have loved most of the stuff Randomer has put out and his drums are always sick but the percussion on this is next level.

  • Danny Weed - Salt Beef

Another sino grime classic from Danny Weed.

  • Plastician - Japan

Think this was my first taste of the Erhu sound which I love and used a few times in the album.
