Influences: Nicola Cruz

Music

In 2015 we were first introduced to a producer and musician who captured an ethereal vision of a futuristic utopia, he channeled personal influences rooted in culture and history through a unique musical channel. Nicola Cruz has been busy ever since having appeared at the likes of Sonar, Berghain and beyond: he has released music via the likes of Multi Culti, ZZK Records, The Magic Movement and Wonderwheel.

He has an incredible talent for layering textures, dynamic percussion and the result is often magic and transcendent. His live show has captured the imagination and there are few who can claim to rival his technical capability when it comes to the presentation of performance.

We invited him to select some influential pieces in the formation of his own outlook.

See below:

Nicola will release a new EP on ZZK in January, more details HERE

Dengue Dengue Dengue - Semillero Ft. Mikongo

Dengue’s approach to electronic music has always been special. They never cease to amaze in the afro-electronic field, every release sounds fresh, always pushing it forward.

  • Quixosis - El Estanquillo

Quixosis has been pushing the scene side to side with us in Quito. I did the mix and master for this one. I only do this other work when a piece really gets me, this is one of those.

  • Iñigo Vontier - Cha Cha Cha

Iñigo Vontrier from Guadalajara, Mexico runs Calypso records. A clear example of the Guadalajaran heat, intense, sweaty, tribal. I love his material and what’s cooking on the label.

  • =Vaskular - Ah! Ah! Ah!

Big fan of this Chilean producer, a mix of ghetto beats with house. I’ve been playing this one a lot, so simple and yet so corporal.

  • Federico Estevez - Hologramas

Fede is an amazing percussionist, performing live in many projects like Chancha via Circuito or Kaleema. I’ve been working closely with him in my new album.

  • Dj Raff - Winter Beat

Always one of my favorite tunes to play since I discovered Raff. Whenever I dj drum and bass / reggae sets, this one comes along.

  • Yana Huaita Yura Huaita

Mala fama comes straight out of Ibarra, Ecuador, delivering this Andes raga. I had the pleasure of playing a show with him for the first time this year in NYC. I’m very excited for his upcoming stuff.

  • Psilosamples * "Agulha No Boneco"

Psilosamples is a master at playing with the structure of a track, takes you to many different places in the same journey.
