Influences: Kid Koala

Music

Guess who's back with a brand new bag of tricks? San remains one of the most important and influential forces in hip hop and turntablism, as a producer he has amassed a sprawling back catalogue of EP's, albums, soundtracks and beyond. He remains regarded as one of the best and most relevant in the industry having featured heavily on Ninja Tune amongst others.

This year marks his return as he prepare to release a new album on Arts & Crafts, a soundtrack to the Floor Kids video game which spans some forty one tracks in true Kid Koala style.

We invited him to dig through his musical heritage and talk about tracks which have helped pave the way for his progression.

Jonathan "Jonjon" Ng - Asthma Tech

I met Jonathan “JonJon” Ng (creator/animator of Floor Kids) when we were both working at the National Film Board. He was working on his project Asthma Tech at the time. It was a short film about an asthmatic kid who used his drawing skills to create amazing adventures. I loved the sketchy pencil style he used in the imaginary “tech” sections of the film. It’s a style he continued to use when he was working on the Floor Kids video game.

  • Coldcut "Beats And Pieces"

I remember stumbling upon this record in the shop when I was a kid. The price was a bit higher than other records because it was imported all the way from the U.K.! It’s a single from Coldcut’s album What’s That Noise? That album that pretty much changed my life! I did my first DJ battles using this vinyl. It continues to be a record that I always have in my crate, and I’ve memorized pretty much every rotation and cut on it!

  • Grandmaster Flash - Wildstyle

This is probably my favourite scene from this legendary film. Grandmaster Flash doing his thing!!!

  • John Carpenter - Big Trouble In Little China

The script, the performances, the design, the music… This John Carpenter film changed my life. The universe that he and his crew created here is unlike anything I’ve seen in a movie before or since.

  • Thelonious Monk - Sophisticated Lady Live

Here’s Thelonious Monk’s take on the Duke Ellington classic. I love how he bends time in his playing. He has such a singular playing style. Keyboard Money Mark introduced me to Monk’s music when we were on tour many moons ago. We were digging through the crates at an old record shop in Chicago and he bought me a copy of a Thelonious Monk Archive Concert Video and said “You should study this dude.” I’ve been a fan ever since!
