Influences: Golden Bug

Music

Born in Paris in his mother's toy shop, Antoine Harispuru, aka Golden Bug, spent his early years being nurtured by a sentient Japanese robot named V.I.C.T.O.R. At the age of 14, Antoine was presented with some birthday presents, gifts from V.I.C.T.O.R. His presents included a Roland TR808, an EMU sampler, and a bunch of old disco records. Over the coming years, Antoine would spend his time perfecting grooves with ghetto-inspired bass, sharp synths, and choppy vocal samples.

Flash forward to today, Antoine is better known as Golden Bug. Known for his punchy sound, Golden Bug's tunes are spun by the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Rodion, Tiga, Ivan Smagghe, and Boris Dlugosh. Ahead of his new album, dedicated to V.I.C.T.O.R, Golden Bug sat down with the Ransom Note to discuss some of the records which have shaped his sound…

Beastie Boys - So What Cha Want

From 12 to 18, I was really into skateboarding, spending my days between Le Trocadero , La Fontaines des Innocents and La Defence. At this time I was listening to all the SK8 bands like Dinosaur Jr, Beastie Boys, Faith No More, Pixies, Guns & Roses, Metallica , etc… Beastie Boys – So What Cha Want is one of my favourites.

  • Beastie Boys - So What Cha Want

From 12 to 18, I was really into skateboarding, spending my days between Le Trocadero , La Fontaines des Innocents and La Defence. At this time I was listening to all the SK8 bands like Dinosaur Jr, Beastie Boys, Faith No More, Pixies, Guns & Roses, Metallica , etc… Beastie Boys – So What Cha Want is one of my favourites.

  • The Sabres Of Paradise - Ballad Of Nicky Mcguire

Then I got into electronic music through my brothers who were really into the early rave parties in Paris. They spent their time in Rough Trade , BPM , Champs Disques buying some records for their private DJ sets. I was not really into it at the beginning but after some brain washing, started to get into electronic music. They gave me all their vinyl collection and if I had to keep one record it would be this, The Sabres Of Paradise – Ballad Of Nicky McGuire.

  • Brothers Of The Coast - Ouverture

After a few years going out to Parisian electronic parties , I fell in love with Francesco Farfa’s sound. A mix between electro, grooves and hypnotic loops. I went to Firenze 3 times with my good friend Aurelien Haas from ‘Get A Room’ to buy some records in a small shop outside of the city called ‘Black Out’. We went back home with lots of records, some are very bad but some are still cool now. Brothers of the coast reminds me of this good time in Italia buying records and eating cantuccini.

  • Wah Wah Watson - Goo Goo Wah Wah - 1976 [Funk]

I met Jeff from ‘Get A Room’ at a wedding in Paris when I was 20. We chilled together a lot with Aurélien , smoking and laughing. Jeff is a human music library. He has an amazing record collection and he made me discover black music. Norman Whitfield, Zapp, Midnight Star, Wah Wah Watson, etc… Goo Goo Wah Wah reminds me Jeff’s sofa: Dirty.

  • Daft Punk - Daftendirekt

Like any good Frenchman, I get brought to life by Daft Punk’s ‘Homework’. It always kicks me out of my chair.

  • Playgroup - Number One

Trevor Jackson’s Output records is one of the most important musical inputs for me: 10 years of amazing releases and iconic artwork. Thanks to him I discovered bands like LCD, Volga Select, Manhead and The Rapture.

  • Paolo Del Prete Bwh Stop Nathanwilkins Rmx Youtube Video Bootleg

I used to listen Ivan Smagghe’s radio show on my way to university. It was on Radio Nova and it was named TEST. Thanks to his show I listened to a lot of amazing tunes… I can’t remember names but the selection was always good. A few years later he released his Death Disco compilation on Eskimo records. Now lots of producers make that kind of sound but at this time it was brand new, at least for me.

  • Artificial Organs - While The City Sleeps (1980)

I’ve lived for 15 years in Barcelona and have met lots of very talented artists and labels owner like Foehn Records, Love Monk, BCOre, Domestica Spain, etc… All these labels have a strong musical and visual identity. Domestica releases and re-edits: new wave, post punk, cold wave, krautrock and last year Domestica reissued Artificial Organ which I love.

  • Premiere: Pitch - What Am I Gonna Do For Fun (Tolouse Low Trax Remix) [Idle Press]

Tolouse Low Trax is one of my favourite producers. I first listened to his music when I heard his remix of Rodion & Fabrizio Mammarella – Inner Outer, out on Les Disques de la mort. It’s everything I love: minimal, groovy, unique. Voodoo tunes.

  • Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - Beeline [Cftpa]

Marc from Foehn records gave me a compilation a few years ago. A mix between Foehn records’ releases and songs from other labels. Casiotone For The Painfully Alone – Beeline is unfortunately an unknown song but it’s awesome. Listen to it and share it. Cheap tune full of energy.
