Influences: Cottam

Music

Brighton-based enterprise FatCat are launching a new imprint called FCR, with a very succinct mission statement – "releasing club records that we like". Stay tuned for new music from DJJ, Mall Grab, Steve Bicknell and Grain. But back in the present, the first release on FCR is a driving house 12" from Cottam, who's previously released stuff on the likes of Story, Wolf, Aus and Ruff Draft. 'I Can't Carry On' is an epic old school deep house cut, backed by a deep percussive remix from Detroit artist Todd Modes. Cottam has kindly put together this great Influences playlist for us – from Robert Hood and Model 500 to Mark E and Drexciya, get stuck in below.

I Can't Carry On is out now on FCR, order here.

Inner City - Share My Life (Kenny Larkin Remix)

Inner City are ace and were part of the soundtrack of my late teens/early twenties. Kenny Larkin was like a god to me back then. I got kinda obsessed with his music… then I came across this and, well, wow!!!!

  • 69 - Desire

Carl Craig did some belters over the years. Out of all of them – and there are many – THIS is the one!!!!!

  • Newworldaquarium - Trespassers

Newworldaquarium’s ‘Trespassers’, damn… get it in the mix and work it, you know it makes sense…

  • Nightmares On Wax - Aftermath

Music for those dark, sweaty, heads down moments. Still gives me shivers.

  • Robert Hood - Minus

I used to play techno quite a lot, well, most of the time really. Hood, Mills, UR, Surgeon, Regis etc etc. This was one of those tracks that grabbed me, sucked me in and then spat me out at regular intervals…

  • Linkwood - Love Lost

This isn’t one that’s influenced me, it’s only a year or two old, but it’s one I fell head over heels in love with from my first listen at home. Linkwood on fire!!! Makes me melt, in a good way.

  • Drexciya - Black Sea

Drexciya’s ‘Black Sea’ hit the right buttons for me back then and to this day gets me shuffling me wee posterior in me chair.

  • The Jam - Funeral Pyre

I used to share a bedroom with my eldest brother Stephen. He had a box full of records and I remember loving one of his Jam albums and this track in particular. Them drums eh…

  • Model 500 - Starlight (Original Mix)

Oh aye, my pal Watson had this and he used to lend it me all the time before I got one. Model 500 turning out an absolute stunner.

  • Mark E - Slave 1

When Rubadub gave me my break and released those first Cottam releases, Mark E was a massive influence on me… Love his chug…
