Influences: Aethers Spring

Music

Next month marks the release of a new EP from Aethers Spring, a mysterious producer and an undercover operator. There is little to no information known about the source of the secretive EP. From a musical perspective it dabbles and meanders between the ethereal fringes of ambient electronica whilst also tilts a nod of the hat to the abstract dancefloor. One for the heads with an intriguing narrative, it is a forward thinking body of music which channels an array of far flung, eclectic infuences into one concise package.

As such it seemed appropriate to challenge the roots and inspiration behind the musical taste of this mysterious artist, asking them to elaborate on the tracks and musicians who have helped to form the basis of their taste and hence own take on electronic soundscapes.

Portishead - The Rip

There is something precious and rare about an established act who neither grasps after young trends nor falls too far back on old formulas. With Third Portishead took their time in crafting something elegant and singular. The production is masterful; especially sublime in its textures and arrangement.

  • Tettix Hexer - Visible Winds Of Spring

Hearing this for the first time felt like meeting a long-lost sibling. The spirit and intent of the song lies almost perfectly in line with a lot of my own.

  • Drexciya - Wavejumper (Aqualung Version)

When it comes to visceral electro/acid, Drexciya sit at the apex. But the whole project transcends to another realm entirely by adorning itself with fantasy and and aquatic Afrofuturism. The music gains new depth and all of sudden the tracks have a totally distinctive atmosphere and a setting. Refreshing and avant-garde in a scene fixated on real-life DJ personalities. So much joy and mischievous fun in this track.

  • Maurice Ravel - Gaspard De La Nuit (Le Gibet)

The opening section of this piece is one of the most hauntingly sombre minutes of music I know. Such articulation and depth of feeling is something to aspire to.

  • Gori Women’S Choir (Yosif Ketchakhmadze) - Archaica I

    …………ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwWWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHH!!!

  • Afx - Halibut Acid

The obligatory Richard D. James mention. For me, he’s probably at his best when the music is kept simple and melodic rather than glitched and “intelligent”. This track has not left my head since the day I heard it.

  • My Bloody Valentine – Unreleased/Untitled

Beautiful, tumbling sound of the id. “[Led Zeppelin’s] sex songs were about wanting it. [Ours] were doing it.” – Kevin Shields

  • User18081971 - Avril Altdelay

An already simple, naïve and very pure song distilled down to sheer essence. Its an influence because it acts as a reminder to pursue this essence and not get too distracted by all the fluff. S/O to John Lambert for the perfect photo pairing.

  • New Composers – Love Of Nature

The vocal line is striking. It’s a live field recording of a native Peruvian wedding song. It’s totally situational and maybe because of this it brims with raw tenderness. Influential because it is a reminder of music’s most primary and essential function.

  • Beck - Dior Homme Spring Summer 2005 Catwalk Show

    What?

  • Smokey Robinson And The Miracles - A Legend In Its Own Time (E-Mix)

    Thanks for listening 🙂
