8 Tracks: Of Spooky House With Jukes Of Hazard

Music

As co-founders & resident DJ duo for Magic Door, Jukes of Hazard aka Will Power & Jit Coulter-Patel, have steered and at times, made up the music policy since the first ever Magic Door party.

With a sound ambiguously defined as spooky house & disco techno, they tend to play pretty much whatever they want. For this feature they have dug through the spooky house end of their playlists and put together 8 of their favourites collated from 5 years of Magic Door parties.

David August - Agatha

Renowned for his ethereal productions, Agatha is arguable one David August’s most enchanting in a locker full of enchanting. Released by Innervisions in 2014 as part of the 2 track EP, Epikur, A patient build up, classical horror movie strings and some bonus mysterious noises as the track gets into its stride has made this a firm late late night favourite at Magic Door ever since its release.

  • Dan Le Sac Feat Emma Lee - Memorial (Pbr Streetgang Remix)

We think this is the track that made us make up the genre ‘Spooky House’ and add it to the Magic Door music policy. Bone chilling vocals from Emma-Lee Moss and a horror-ble bass line courtesy of a remix from our pals and Magic Door regular’s, PBR Streetgang.

  • Acid Pauli - Nana (Original Mix)

A signature tune of friend and fellow Magic Door resident, Maxxi Soundsystem but we play it whenever he isn’t looking / in the building! Not quite full spooky, more magical mushroom dream with a tinge of spooky. A cacophony of choppy synths guide you through the track to a perfectly piercing, vocal crescendo.

  • Martin Buttrich - Enough Love To Hate It

This could have been one of many tracks taken off Martin Buttrich’s Crash album to make this list. The album is full of deep, hypnotic tracks with experimental noises galore. Enough Love to Hate It edges things with its ancient temple residing ghost vocal, rolling percussion then dropping into some expansive, hugely atmospheric, synthesised sitar.

  • Elden St [Edit] [Sebo K Watergate Edit] - Martyn

Released back in 2009 as part of the Tucan EP on Berlin’s Watergate imprint, this is the oldest track to make this list. Its primary spookiness is driven by some seriously ghosting pads which underpin the whole melody of the track. Add in some poltergeist vocals and waft it all over some gentle yet rolling tech drums and you have something pretty timeless.

  • Shaun Reeves & Guti - Saudade

An early collaboration between classically trained Argentinian pianist / live tech producer, Guti, and Visionquest’s, Shaun Reeves. With equally haunting keys & vocal, this seamlessly builds from atmospheric to rolling with a hint of South American samba.

  • Sasse - Soul Sounds [Dirt Crew Solid Diamond Remix]

Peak time voodoo magic on speed from Sasse, head honcho of Berlin label, Mood Music. Tight percussion, massive piano & synth riffs and a intermittent day of dead esq vocal drive this along.

  • Baba Stiltz - Are You Mad? Cause I'M Not Mad...

A truly enchanting track from the enigmatic, Stockholm based, Baba Stiltz. Haunting yet uplifting keys run through this slow builder turning into a dance floor epic about half way through.
