8 Tracks: Of Sonic Influences with Perko

Music

Based in Copenhagen but orginating from Glasgow, Fergus Jones is a producer and disc jockey who has been a murky presence amidst leftfield electronic music for several years now.

However, now a plan's afoot…

Last year marked the release of a new EP on Glasgow based label Numbers, a record label which has become synonymous with quality and innovation. A mysterious new producer revealed six tracks under the name of Perko – they were an abstract mixture of deep textures, rumbling low end and intriguing influences which drew from rave, garage, bass and beyond. It was well received. Other appearances have included a remix for Peder Mannerfelt and an appearance on Nathan Micay's edits label. We've been privately informed that there is a whole lot more around the corner to follow…

Tomorrow night Perko will play in London alongside Ally Tropical for Plant Life, we invited him to cite eight tracks which explain the process by which he is influenced by sound design and structure.

Stevie Williams In Tws - 'The Reason'

The whole video is a classic but this part is especially sick. Love all the glitchy noisy effects, and the skating itself has an almost ASMR quality.

  • Stevie Williams In Tws - 'The Reason'

The whole video is a classic but this part is especially sick. Love all the glitchy noisy effects, and the skating itself has an almost ASMR quality.

  • Beatrice Dillon Boiler Room

I love how the bass sounds in this video. Often think about it when I’m mixing tracks. Trying to achieve that kind of controlled distortion in a studio setting.

  • Dj Ron & Mc Gq @ Awol 1994

Listen to a lot of these old rave tape rips cycling to and from my studio. The tape saturation is super nice on this one.

  • 10 Hour Icebreaker Asmr

Was so happy to find out this was back on Youtube. The original was taken down a year or so ago for some reason. Listened to it a lot whilst I was studying. Pro tip: layer this with some Rhythm & Sound for some next level density.

  • Killamanjaro Vs Stone Love Vs Metromedia - Sound Clash 1994

Crazy energy in this. Love the crowd noises in the background.

  • Youngsta B2b Loefah Rinse Fm 2005

Could have chosen any of the old Rinse recordings. Love the energy that comes across, and how the recordings distorts when they’re running too hot. Kode9 also has a bunch on his Soundcloud that I’d recommend checking out.

  • Masaaki Takano Water Droplets

A lot of nice records like this. Check out Chee Shimizu’s Obscure Sound for more.

  • Dj Screw - Wineberry Over Gold

4 or 5 years ago I spent a whole summer at my parents house in Scotland blasting Screw tapes. RIP
