8 Tracks Of: radioLagos with Thomas Fehlmann

Music

There are few who have established such a prolific and longstanding musical career, Thomas Fehlmann might be a familiar name to some whilst others might not have been gifted the opportunity to stumble upon his abstract bewilderment and strange sounds. Next month marks the release of his seventh solo album which is titled "Los Lagos". It will be released on Kompakt, an imprint with which he has had a close working relationship and bond – four of the seven albums have all appeared on the imprint. Described as an electronic godfather, the 61 year old has a sprawling back catalogue and a wealth of influence. We invited him to pick eight…

"Considering the heat, I was toying with the idea of doing a yacht rock list, but then I opened the fridge and remembered radioLAGOS. radioLagos is a loose series of podcast I’m doing bringing together the wild and the beautiful. All stuff I love and play at home. Stuff that belongs to my canon."

Jon Hassell - Dreaming

Very refreshing how Jon Hassell comes back with his new album. Staying true to his characteristic sound but expanding it in a very contemporary surrounding to a spectacular moving avant-ambient masterpiece.

  • Frank Zappa - Peaches En Regalia

Always a sucker for a serious Zappa tune. this one has stood the test of time particularly well. I’m humming this on the way to the shops.

  • Terrence Dixon - The Switch

Doing his trademark space-techno-jazz in his own moody yet razor sharp fashion, this track is reassuring. There ARE new ideas behind every corner. You just gotta make the effort to actually look behind them.

  • Hailu Mergia - Sewnetuwa

This tells me about a vibe coming from Ethiopia that i would like to subscribe too. Soul mates beyond race, beyond geography, beyond religion and beyond age.

  • Tusia Beridze - Those Things (Thomas Fehlmann Mix)

A remix I did for my favourite Georgian musician Tusia Beridze.
The haunting melancholy of the caucasus.

  • Actress - Lageos

A slice of cutting edge. I like Actress because he’s doing everything out of a soulful centre. Funny album title!

  • Equipoise - The De Johnette Complex

A timeless beauty. Maybe unexpected but so compellingly stated in it’s simple form.
It’s deep and makes you forget about genres.

  • Thundercat - 'Show You The Way (Feat. Michael Mcdonald & Kenny Loggins)

Yes, yacht rock! Couldn’t quite leave it out. Particularly liking Michael McDonald of course..
