8 Tracks: Of Pacific Northwest Indie With Ccfx

Music

As far as supergroups go this one is pretty damn hot. Comprised of two seminal Olympia pop outfits, CC Dust and Trans FX, the new project is a showcase of raw uncensored talent and highlights the groundbreaking sequence of sound emerging from the Pacific Northwest. Blending subtle hints of indie pop alongside experimental haze the music is then rounded off by the delicate vocal accompaniment of Maryjane. Their sound oozes a humble sense of nostalgia, a throwback with a beautiful sense of reinvention.

We invited them to showcase some of their favourite music emerging from the Pacific Northwest… Discover at your leisure..

CCFX EP is out 20th October on DFA.

Broken Water - Dead Light

Broken Water comes from Olympia, Washington and have been favored by the locals there for some time. This is off the 2010 release ‘Whet.’ The rest of the release is really great as well, Broken Water were a prolific band and a privilege to see live time and again.

  • Scary Window - Handycam [Sw2 Version]

This track is by accomplished videographer/producer/skateboarder and Olympia native Joe Bellamy, aka Scary Window. Joe recently produced the music video for TRANS FX’s new song ‘Jest Sane’ and did a terrific job. Check out his channel for more Scary Window creations.

  • Earth - Tallahassee

This is the northwest, or at least, what it used to be. You still get this subterranean grime in and around Seattle, but it’s fading fast. This is Dylan shortly after Kurt died… what a bad motherfucker!

  • Courtney Love - Hey Antoinette!

This is NW indie! Courtney Love got their name jacked by Courtney Love… Apparently, Lois [Maffeo] and Courtney were roommates in San Francisco, and after some time Lois received a cease and desist to stop her band. Damn… There are still a lot of us who aren’t entirely convinced Kurt killed himself…

  • Gun Outfit - Landscape Painter

Okay, okay… so Gun Outfit moved to LA some years back, but hey, they are still the best NW indie band out there goin’, and that’s a fact! This one’s off their new album ‘Out of Range’ which I still haven’t heard because it’s not out yet… but this track makes me smile.

  • Trans Fx - Tall Buildings

TRANS FX has way too many tracks to choose from but this one gets stuck in my head maybe the most. The piano sample is beautiful and dizzying. Chris’ voice sounds like he is performing a guided meditation. It makes me feel the same on-the-ground vertigo one can get when looking up too fast.

  • Desire Complex - Way It Is

Desire Complex was a recent and very short lived synth punk band from Olympia. I think it’s kind of cool that they went so hard and then called it. This video is all best parts amateur Halber Mensch shot on a grubby beach in the middle of a nine month winter. A true document to northwestern creative vortexes.

  • Briana Marela - Farthest Shore

This is Briana Marela. I remember going to an early show and sitting on the floor of Chez Puget hoping no one around me was noticing that I had a thick stream of tears pouring out of my face. The thing about her is that though she is evolving so much as a musician since I first met her, she doesn’t need any of her gear or high production to commune whatever silk is growing inside her. If anything it’s too obvious.
