As the radiant summer sun glimmers over shrubbery-covered hilltops, sound blares in panoramic fashion, tickling eardrums from 360 degrees. A neighbourly swarm of dancers gather, basking in the powerful rays and positive vibrations. Feet stomp, hands clap. Heads bounce in time with the beat. Funktion Ones shake with an energetic fervour. As the sun bows behind the patchwork field landscape, bright lights and lasers scythe through the smoke-filled air. Bodies continue to sway rhythmically as the night descends. Situated in the Lot Valley in South West France, Monticule Festival strikes a truly unique chord.
In the greenroom of a club some 6 years ago, a crew of mates dreamt of a vision. Passing around a phone, the group ogled over pictures of a serene setting rich in natural beauty. Dreaming, the troop envisioned ravers frolicking amongst the towering oak trees, paddling in lakes of emerald coloured water and coming together for a long-weekend of intimacy and fun. They’d found their utopia.
Having started out as a glorified house party, complete with international bookings, Monticule has evolved into one of France’s favourite celebrations of superior sonics, culture and wellbeing. At the Domaine De Gayfié, revellers can relax and rejuvenate at yoga sessions, sunbathe alongside the swimming pool, and shoot hoops or kick a ball on the hard courts whilst some of the world’s best selectors soundtrack mid-June’s warmth. With an array of local and international DJs descending upon the sun-soaked hilltop, 2019’s edition promises to be a truly special occasion.

Hulk Hodn Cologne's Patrick Rüdiger, better known as Hulk Hodn, is a beatsmith churning out lethargic, laid-back rhythms. Wielding together luscious melodies, complete with hazy jazz samples, crisp percussion and a warming lo-fi feel, the German producer makes tracks that seem perfect for Monticule’s vibe. Under his Hodini moniker, Rüdiger has collaborated with Damiano von Erckhert and Glenn Astro, two of the Rhine region’s favourite musicians. His releases on Money $ex Records and Wolf Music Recordings tread the hip-hop-house tightrope, complete with dulcet basslines and quirky brass-play. However, under his Hulk Hodn it’s strictly beats. First releasing under the alias in 2009 on Melting Pot Music, Rüdiger has gone on to produce 5 albums and 3 singles. Smooth and soulful, 2018’s ‘Lost Ish’ album on Groove Attack Record Store saunters between boom-bap, broken beats and hip-hop. Check the MF Doom sample in this mellow instrumental.
