8 Tracks: Of Detroit With Tama Sumo & Lakuti

Music

Next month marks the return of perhaps one of the most intuitive parties in London, a night which can sometimes slip beneath the radar but is all the better as a result. Tama Sumo and Lakuti are the duo behind the "Your Love" party series, the 4th of November will see them invite none other than Rick Wilhite and Portable to Bloc in East London for a late night affair.

In keeping with the theme of the evening the pair have selected an array of tracks and record labels from Detroit which have helped to ignite their imaginations and inspire but we'll let them introduce the concept themselves….

"Detroit is a city that is constantly evolving as best demonstrated by it’s music. From Motown to Parliament and J Dilla – Jeff Mills, UR, Mike Huckaby, Kelli Hand to Kyle Hall – there never seems to be a shortage of top drawer music coming from the Motor City. Here is our top 8 go to labels for all things house. There are plenty more labels to pick but we only have 8 spots."

Dego & Kaidi - Treasure Beach

What can we say about Theo Parrish that has not been said before.
His influence on not just ourselves but many others can be felt everyday. The current hyped up and trendy selector movement truly owes everything to people like him.
Sound Signature has recently released an ace album by Dego & Kaidi titled – A So We Gwarn.
Our album track pick is “Treasure Beach”.

  • Marcellus Pittman - There's Somebody Out There

It is no secret that we highly rate Marcellus Pittman. Prolific producer and a demon behind the decks.
We always look forward to a Unirhythm release.
Our pick is a track titled “There’s somebody out there” – taken from The Midwest Advocates E.P. Part One .

  • Omar S - Thank U 4 Letting Me Be Myself

Omar S – an enigma and a talent to boot. FXHE keeps on churning the goods. We could have picked so many tracks from the label. We will go with this hit from Omar S himself.
“Thank you for letting me be myself” –
taken from the similarly titled album back in 2013 .

  • Kyle Hall - Dr. Crunch

We met Kyle pretty much at the beginning of him touring Europe. He was around 17 yrs old I believe at the time. Kyle gets better and better with each new production. It’s great to see the city of Detroit giving him a nod with a spirit award for his contribution to the music culture.
We’re still feeling “Crunch” , a track taken from his debut album – back in 2013.

  • Patrice Scott - Highness [Ndatl Muzik]

Atlanta transplant with Detroit roots . Kai Alice sits on a label admired by many a respecting house head out there and we had to include the label. We have highlighted a track by Patrice Scott called “Highness” taken from the NDATL Special Edition 2017 EP .

  • Patrice Scott - Beyond Deep (2007)

Talking about Patrice Scott. A great producer who is pushing from all cylinders right now.
All releases on the label are on point.
We chose to however revisit thee track that first got us hooked .

  • Dj Genesis - It´S You

Very small output and not much of late but we are huge fans of Dj Genesis and our very fave record on the label is by her and is titled “It’s You”.

  • Waajeed - Better Late Then Never

Robert O’Bryant aka Wajeed has proven himself to be a producer of note. As an original member of Slum Village and executively producing Dwele’s 1st album Rize – he has also shown his chops as a founding member of Platinum Pied Pipers alongside Darnell Bolden aka Saadiq. Tiny Hearts is another of his hip hop outfits with Tim K which is worth highlighting. He also founded The Bling 47 group which released some of the late J Dilla’s work.
Wajeed has also mesmerised with his electronically inclined output on labels such as Sound Signature & his very own label Dirt Tech Reck .
He came out with easily one of the best EP’s for 2017 – “The Shango” EP on Dirt Tech Rec.
We have picked a track from that EP titled – “Better Late than Never”.
