8 Tracks: From Accra, Ghana With Rabo & Snob

Music

Since the mid nineties RaBo and SnoB have been collecting records and playing their take on funk, soul and disco out in clubs in Tel Aviv and beyond. The pair are arguably an inspirational force amidst the Israeli electronic music community and continue to shine a light on sounds far beyond the realms of the country. The pair are set to release a new EP on LoveDancing titled 'Yawumna'. The release was the result of a chance meeting at Accra's main market while the duo were out looking for records and handmade percussions. They guide us through some selections found overseas.

" As far as we’ve been told, there’s only one record shop left in Accra. Basically it's a metal ship container packed with records, literally up to the ceiling. All look in REAL bad shape, some are not audible, some still play nicely and all are separated into batches of 25 records each. They are tied together with plain rope. It's hot, we mean 40 Celsius, steamy hot. Out of nowhere the man in charge pulls out a very old, yet still functioning, turntable which is connected to a shabby mid range only boombox with a steel wire. Now, let the digging begin."

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley - Apple

Recognised the name from a killer tune Simi Rap, and when we saw this LP our heart started pumping real fast, but it ain’t nothing compared to the beats and craziness in this amazing LP. If we were to pick just one we’d pick ‘Apple’. The title track is a pure Ghanian Afro funk bomb with a crazy disco bass line, quirky synths and that stomping laid back groove on which Gyedo is doing his thing. Something big.

  • Bonsue Joe Mensah The Afrikan Hustle

Oh yes. Such a great album from the late Joe Mensha. Its A side Bonsue is almost 20 minutes of pure wild afro bliss.

  • Nana Tuffour : Sikyi (Medley)

Considered to be the rarest Nana Tuffour record with a unqiue blend of high-life, jazz, afrobeat and reggae. An 80’s take on high life style, packed with claps, jumpy guitar riffs and occasionally synth bites, and of course Nana’s crooning voice.

  • Atakora Manu - Bre Bre Na Eye (Side Two)

Another great highlife album, with some crispy drum breakbeats, percussions, some analog synths and sound fx. This really made us dance at the shop, with it’s uplifting rhythms and quite unusual production.

  • Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey - "Miliki" ("Je Ka Jo" Edition)

This actually comes from Nigeria, but it was great to find it in Accra. This has some of the best talking drum parts, and they are super loud in the mix ! The arrangements seems kind of sparse at first listen, but it becomes infectious with every listen. We love to open our sets with one of the cuts.

  • Afrofunk, Pat Thomas And Marijata - I Need More

This song has a very unique angle to High Life with a deep layer of keys. We definitely need more like this tune in our crates.

  • Alex Konadu (One Man Thousand), "Odum Aye Saa"

Hammond driven deep soulful anthem, a bit touchy with its sixties vibe but the Ghanaian chanting takes it deep into a tropical steamy hot track. Great for those afternoon summer sessions with a cool drink in one hand.

  • Rob - More

Beyond any doubt, here lies the holy grail. Funky Rob Way, a super rare find, in original Ghana press, and the record even plays quite well. No cover though. We knew Rob Make it Slow Make it Fast, and on first site we were kinda bummed that its not this record. Ha, little did we know. A super crazy funk record from head to toe, no fillers only killers and the tag price for this one was 1500 euros last time we checked discogs. A sweet unforgettable memory from an amazing trip.
