Slick Rick Announces First Ever Uk Tour

Art & Culture

Despite being born in that most fertile of hip hop breeding grounds, Mitcham, Surrey, and despite having been dropping bars since the Eighties, Children's Story rapper Slick Rick has never once toured the UK. There's a reason for this-  having moved to the States as a young lad, Rick never got his visa sorted out properly, and (barring a Top of the Pops performance in 1985) has been too scared to leave the country in case they don't lethim back in.

This dodgy visa situation came to a head during George Bush's reign when, in 2001, Rick dared to leave the country to perform on a Carribbean cruise, only to find himself banged up as an illegal immigrant on his return. Matters weren't helped by 9/11 happening a few months later, and the new atmosphere of American paranoia had Rick incarcerated for over a year, held in a weird judicial limbo. Since then he's fended off various attempts to deport him, leading up to the point in 2015 where he was finally awarded dual UK/USA citizenship – which brings us to now, his first ever UK tour.

in a press release Rick has described his enthusiasm for his homecoming – although we can't help thinking that the England he's going to return to me be somewhat different from the country he imagines…

“I’m coming home, back to my foundation, my make-up, my English roots,” he says. “I’m looking forward to a nice cup of tea and some tasty biscuits.”

26 November – London – O2 Forum
27 November – Bristol – O2 Academy
