Preview: Sound Of Kings

Art & Culture

Welcome to the 'Sound of Kings’ an installation in the basement of the The Star of Kings on Thursday 1st May.

The piece, created by Nuik Collective aims to sonically capture the rapid development and transformation of London's Kings Cross with recordings submitted by the public.

The historic area surrounding King’s Cross is in the midst of a huge regeneration, redevelopment and renewal programme, but what do these changes sound like?

Using any device they had to hand – smartphones for example – people who live, work and study in the neighbourhood have been submitting their recordings of the transformation of the area. Inside, outside…traffic noise, rumbles of heavy machinery, the trickle of the canal or of the fountains of Granary square, the hustle-bustle of the shops, snippets of conversation, journeys into or out of the station.

Using these sounds, the collective have composed an ever-changing piece that will be featured in the venue’s basement for a week and will also perform a live composition on the night of the private view.

Nuik Collective engages in the re-appropriation and presentation of stories ingrained in sound.

A sound installation documenting the unprecedented renewal of the Kings Cross area
