8 Acts To Catch At Outlook 2017

Art & Culture

2017 marks the 10th anniversary edition of Outlook, celebrating a decade of bass music and soundsystem culture in Croatia. Fittingly, the festival have come through with one of their finest lineups to date, with headliners including the likes of Ghostface Killah, Giggs, Wiley, Goldie, David Rodigan and Pharoahe Monch.

Exciting as the bigger names are, it's further down the bill where Outlook's programming truly shines. Here's eight of the sets we're looking forward to the most. See you in the fort.

Príncipe Discos

Shining a light on Lisbon’s batida scene and propelling its artists to global acclaim, Príncipe Discos is undoubtedly one of the finest electronic labels of the decade. Their Outlook showcase hosts four of their finest talents – DJ Nigga Fox, Nídia Minaj, scene originator DJ Nervoso, and breakout star DJ Marfox who’s also released on Warp and Lit City Trax. Drum-heavy party music that fucks with your head – what more could you ask for really?

Nines

Having built an impressive underground fanbase over the past few years with a series of street mixtapes, the Harlesden rapper’s XL debut ‘One Foot Out’ shot to a staggering #4 in the charts back in February with barely any traditional promo support. Bound to be one of the festival’s most anticipated sets, expect singles ‘High Roller’ and ‘Trapper of the Year’ to be some of the many highlights.

Swing Ting

First a radio show, then a party, now a label as well – this Manchester crew have gone from strength to strength over the past decade. Founders Samrai and Platt will be joined at Outlook by residents Joey B, Murlo and MC Fox. United by a love of soundsystem culture, between them they’ve also released on labels such as Rinse, Keysound, Mixpak and UTTU. This is bound to be one of the most exciting sets of the weekend, taking in everything from garage and grime to dancehall and RnB.

Lamont

Bristol basshead Lamont is best known for his involvement with the Swamp81 and Durkle Disco labels, headed up by veterans Loefah and Zed Bias respectively. It’s always a must-listen affair whenever he heads up the Swamp81 show on Rinse, the best place to hear his heady mix of deep cuts and unreleased bangers. Recently Lamont has been working with MCs such as Kwam, Snowy, Nico Lindsay and Grim Sickers – no doubt we’ll hear many of these new tracks during his Outlook set.

Not3s

How’s this for an achievement – name one other MC who’s seen their name become a taxi firm promo code? Didn’t think so. Hackney artist Not3s did just that on the back of his maddeningly catchy single ‘Addison Lee’, which has since racked up almost 4 million views. He’s no one hit wonder either – new piano-led single ‘Notice’ confirmed he’s a major hook writer. Go see him before he blows up even more.

Princess Nokia

Princess Nokia’s set is definitely one you need to catch. The underground rap sensation is one of the hottest MCs to come out of NYC in recent years. Her two albums to date – 1992 and Metallic Butterfly – strike a balance between hip hop classicism, progressive lyrics and out-there sonics, resulting in an exciting style that lays the groundwork for her to make a huge impact over the next few years. Her live show is pretty wild, so get down the front for this one.

Amy Becker

Amy Becker has firmly established herself as one of the most exciting DJs on the circuit. Drawing from all elements of UK bass culture (with an emphasis on grime and drum-heavy club cuts), her infectious energy and pitch-perfect selections mean her sets are among the most purely fun we’ve experienced. While last year’s RMX 12” showed off her talents as a curator (drawing together contributions from the likes of YGG and Logos), it’s the rave where she’s most effective, and her Outlook show is bound to be a distillation of everything she does best.

Grade 10

Kollaps, Forever, Prayer, 8Ball, Unslaved, Classic Coke, Loosewomen and Nokia Boys. Those are the members of Grade 10, a mysterious DIY Leicester collective who have been turning a lot of heads recently with their wide-ranging, collaborative, eclectic productions. From house and jungle to grime and ambient, everything feels linked under the Grade 10 banner, helped by the unifying visuals from in-house designer Greg. Regulars on Radar Radio, they’ve also turned in some excellent mixes for the likes of Hyponik and The Astral Plane. Expect the unexpected from their Outlook set.

Outlook Festival 2017 takes place 7-10 Sept at a goddamn abandoned fort in Pula, Croatia, and you can buy tickets here.
