Next month marks the release of a debut album from the New York based producer Will DiMaggio. Despite a fairly mysterious presence and having released precious little music previously there is a great deal of expectation surrounding the forthcoming album which is titled "At Ease" and will be available from the 11th of May. However, fear not, such expectation is warranted - trust us we've heard it. The release is a dreamy whirlwind of elegantly crafted house: ethereal pads, jazz infused solo work, elements of funk, soul and boogie from days gone by. This one is a little bit special.
Anyway, we invited Will DiMaggio to introduce us to his world, including his pet rabbit as he guides us through the mean streets of New York city and into his apartment.
Share with us your favourite recipe. What is the go to meal/ or perfect romantic fine-dining experience for yourselves? How did this recipe come about and any tips for our readers?
So many to name, mostly recipes I picked up from my folks, Italian-American and Armenian style food. Tanya, my girlfriend, stays asking me to make this pasta with cauliflower dish. It’s something like this: red pepper flakes, garlic, and anchovy into olive oil, cook down the cauliflower, add a bit of pasta water, finish with parmesan and parsley. Mad good.
What’s your favourite room in your home and why?
My room is sick and gets a lot of sunlight but has terrible wifi reception which obviously disqualifies it. I like our studio too, small but with a window overlooking the street, nice tree cover. I have a printer and a large kallax up in there, shipping materials, few miscellaneous joints from Muji , makes me feel like a straight up adult.
What’s in your fridge right now? How often do you clean it?
The essentials… eggs, milk, stock, good parmesan, a few Modelos, carrots for my rabbit. Miso paste, curry paste. Hot sauce. Clean it out a few times a year probably.
How would you describe the decor in your home?
Pretty functional, lots of shelving, few plants here and there for good measure.
Are you handy at DIY or do you get someone in?
I’m pretty resourceful but also sort of lazy when it comes to fixing unessential things.
What do you eat for breakfast?
Generally either soft-boiled eggs and toast or Raisin Bran with bananas.
Do you have a nutri-bullet? Have you ever used it? If so, any health boosting juices you would recommend?
Yes, I don’t use it for juices though. Sometimes I’ll puree soups or sauces in it -- works great. I’ve mixed dough in one of those joints, you can do whatever with them.
Who is your neighbour? What do they do? If you’ve not talked to them… maybe now would be a good opportunity to.
My downstairs neighbors are close friends of mine.. Juan and Jio who run Exotic Dance, and JP who makes music with modular synths. Our neighbors beside us are chill too, their crib is like a hangout for all of their extended family in the area. They have everyone over on the regular when it’s nice out, grilling, kids rolling around in those little Jeep toy cars. They have a mad loud dog though, sort of alarming late night.
Bath or shower?
Shower for sure, but one day I’ll have a bathtub sick enough to use regularly.
It’s a lazy evening, no time for cooking. What’s your takeaway option? Who do you use? Do they know you and expect the usual order from you?
Super Pollo in Ridgewood. Extremely sick Ecuadorian chicken spot. I’m getting either the chicken dinner, chicken burrito, or chicken salad, extra green sauce. They deliver in one of those little smart cars painted with the Super Pollo chicken on each side.
Do you eat your dinner at the table or on your lap. Do you have a local shop or are you a supermarket whore ?? like the rest of us?
I usually shop the Western Beef on Metropolitan Ave for essentials, canned goods, etc, and get my produce, meat, deli stuff at Valentino’s, a small Italian grocery in Ridgewood. Their butcher is good too. There are mad smaller speciality stores in Ridgewood which is sick, I try to go to them when I can. Benny’s across the street from my house also, shout out to that crew. Follow their instagram.
Is there a piece of art or ornament that holds particularly fond memories for you, from childhood or travels perhaps?
I have mad little boxes and carved bowl type joints beside my bed that I’ve accumulated over the years, most of them hold some significance. A few are from close friends. One of them was hand-carved by my mother’s grandfather I think, in Armenia. They are all full of mementos, stickers, random joints, so it’s nice to go through them every now and then and reminisce.
Animals. We love cats here at R$N, but just love people with pets. Is there a special furry/ feathered/ scaly creature in your life, tell us a little about them?
Yeah, I have a lionhead rabbit named Bean. I got him while living in Detroit a few years ago. One of my bests and the cutest animal I’ve ever seen. We’re trying to develop his brand right now, working to get his instagram Therapy_Bean some more exposure. He’s already well known within the NY underground.
Are you a messy person? What’s the worst state your home has been left in after a party?
Sort of, I need a clean kitchen to function, but I’m fine with messy bedrooms. We used to have mad big parties when we first moved into this spot, nothing crazy ever really happened though. I was probably more concerned with our records being mixed up than anything.
What’s your most annoying habit as a room mate if indeed you do have a room mate?
I play music too loud, I don’t like using headphones. I like to start my day by jamming like Rance Allen or Clark Sisters at full blast. This Loving Sisters joint on the ABC Peacock I gripped recently. Stuff like that, gets my mood in check but likely mad annoying to anyone else in the house.
What’s the worst room-mate you’ve ever had?
I actually can’t think of a real bad roommate experience, I’ve been pretty fortunate.
Is there a view from your window, balcony, front door, terrace? Can you share that with us? Who do you look for coming along the street.
The sick view from our house is from the roof -- we are at one of the highest points in the area so you get a nice view of the manhattan skyline.
Pick 6 dinner party guests from history, real or fictional to invite to your home?
I don’t know really, probably just my friends, the people I prefer to spend time with regularly. Maybe some dead musician, but would probably be mad awkward, like who is this dude making me dinner right now.
Do you know the name of your postman? (postal worker?)
Not by name, but I know her well enough to grab our mail on the street. I usually see her on the way to the train so I’ll grip records or whatever on the way to work.
Where do you listen to music in the home and what’s the set up?
We got 1200s, one CDJ, an older Pioneer 4-channel mixer, and some little studio monitors in our kitchen & living room area. I play records there, sometimes I’ll listen to music in our studio.
What would you change about your home?
The floors are made from unfinished wood so they get mad dirty, hate it. The guy who redid our interior before we moved in made mad minor errors that we’ve picked up on over the years. The alignment of kitchen cabinets, weird issues like that.
Anything else we’ve missed about your home you’d like to discuss?
It’s a cool spot, but I feel most grateful the community in Ridgewood and the opportunity to live with close friends, spending time together, eating, sharing music, maybe heading to bossa, watching people from our stoop, classic and good stuff.
