At Home With… Öona Dahl

Art & Culture

There is a prominent sense of individuality within the music of Öona Dahl. Her sound is somewhat dream like, distant and wonderful. A colourful character she has amassed a reputation amidst fans for her expertly crafted take on dance music. Incorporating ethereal soundscapes she weaves between the lines, blending pop and electronics in an intricate, delicate fashion.

This month marked the release of a new album titled "Holograma" which was released on Hallucienda. We caught up with Öona ash she shows us around her dream like world.

Share with us your favourite recipe.  How did this recipe come about and any tips for our readers?

My favorite go-to recipe is my Grandmothers homemade chicken noodle soup. Simple really. Whole chicken, celery, carrots, onion, crushed can of tomatoes and, at the end, sprinkle it with parmesan cheese.

What’s your favourite room in your home and why?

Nowadays it's a cross between my studio or my bedroom. Up until the past couple years my studio was always in the bedroom, so this has been a nice change. There’s a sense of privacy in both, as either one can be your sacred place where you can be 100% you.  I also like to sleep!

How would you describe the decor in your home?

I collect ornaments and artifacts when I travel. Usually pieces that depict the locations art or history. Anything from Egyptian ushabtis to handmade masks. The paintings on the wall tend to be full of bright colors and fantasy inspired.

What do you eat for breakfast?

Eggs and Avocado. Also, I love greek yogurt with honey, granola and berries.

Do you have a nutri-bullet? Have you ever used it? If so, any health boosting juices you would recommend?

No, but plan on getting it! My old roommate had one that I would use all the time. I created “Green Goo” which is Apples / Banana / Mango / Broccoli / Spinach / Wheatgrass. Sometimes, I would throw other random fruits and veggies that were in the fridge. Also I make a salsa / hot sauce with tomato paste, chipotles, oil and honey.

Who is your neighbour? What do they do?

A very cool and quiet guy who is also a heavy studio and computer person.

Have you ever locked yourself out? What did you do?

Not yet!  Watch it happens tomorrow because I just said that.

Bath or shower?

Bubble bath.

It’s a lazy evening, no time for cooking. What’s your takeaway option? Who do you use? Do they know you and expect the usual order from you?

Thai Food take out. Green curry, veggie spring rolls and tom kha.

Do you eat your dinner at the table or on your lap?

Depends on the dinner. When I cook for something special my boyfriend we'll eat at the dinner table. When its quick and easy we eat in the living room. We have a beautiful deck under the trees, so when it is nice out we eat outside on our outdoor table.

Is there a piece of art or ornament that holds particularly fond memories for you, from childhood or travels perhaps?

Off the top of my head I would say the first music box my Aunt ever gave me. Every year for my birthday for twenty years she would give me a new music box. It is a cloud with a rainbow made of ceramic that plays, “Somewhere over the rainbow”. My second favorite would be a large quartz crystal that I mined myself when I worked for a gemstone and jewelry business.

Animals. We love cats here at R$N, but just love people with pets. Is there a special furry / feathered / scaly creature in your life, tell us a little about them?

My pekingese named Kowe, which is Ewok spelled backwards. I’ve had her since she was a puppy for over ten years now.

Are you a messy person?  What’s the worst state your home has been left in after a party?

Clean and mostly organized. Not one party yet besides me and my boyfriend believe it or not.  We are off the beaten path for now.

Is there a view from your window, balcony, front door, terrace? Can you share that with us?

The nickname for our home is the “The Treehouse” since we’re elevated and surrounded by large, beautiful trees.  We’re in a neighborhood, but there’s a lot of gorgeous nature around us. I like to look out the window and watch for blue jays, woodpeckers and whatever else. My favorite view is a short walk to the ocean to watch the sunset.

Pick 6 dinner party guests from history, real or fictional to invite to your home.

Nefertiti, Terrance Mckenna, Dalai Lama, Princess Ozma, Einstein, Jesus.  I’d enjoy the small talk.

Where do you listen to music in the home?

The studio is where all the gear is, but we listen in all rooms.

Anything else we’ve missed about your home you’d like to discuss?

It’s really easy to feel private and detached here.  It’s very peaceful yet I can also be loud with my music.  My favorite thing being so close to the ocean, though.
