Netflix’s Energy Use Earns ‘D’ Grade In Greenpeace Clean Energy Report

Commentary

Netflix is making little progress to moving it's energy usage to clean, according to a report from Greenpeace. With cloud traffic now comparable to being the equivalent of the sixth largest country in the world, Netflix's clean energy index is at just 17% compared to Apple at 83%. Facebook and Google also did well, with scores of 67 and 56 percent, respectively. With demand for video streaming set to rise to 80% of all internet traffic by 2020, a campaign has been set up to persuade Netflix to "show leadership and and embrace clean energy if we're going to green the internet". Greenpeace want to raise awareness about those companies who received poor grades for their use of non-renewable energy, and have released a video targetting Netflix.
