IVAN SMAGGHE (IT’S A FINE LINE) INTERVIEW

How did the it’s a fine line project come about?

Tim Paris and myself had known each other in Paris for a long time but had never worked together. When we “ended up” as french immigrants in your lovely city, it was pretty natural to get working together. From working together, some kind of “vision” or…”line” came out I suppose, though we come from quite different musical backgrounds.

Is there a philosophy/specific approach to making an it’s a fine line record that differs from your previous production projects?

I am sure there is but putting words on it would be quite difficult as, precisely, we try not to set rules to ourselves. It’s definitely the project I feel the closest to musically, that is sure. Then there are technical aspects but they’re pretty boring.

Can we expect something different from an “it’s a fine line” set than we could from one of your normal sets?

Pretending to be different is a dangerous, and overused, weapon. And I do not really know what is “one of my normal sets”. Let’s say that if Disco Bloodbath is “different”, we’ll try to be. Obviously, I am not going to play big room techno on a sunday tough… But that goes without saying…

What has it’s a fine line got planned for the future? more releases? an album perhaps?

An album ? sure at some point… I’d love to. time is the essence though… We’ve got remixes for Superpitcher, Discodeine and more on their way. And our new Ep “Do the Hot Tar!/Bachbeat” is just out on Marketing.

What are your favorite clubs to play at?

Hopefully, always the next one.
