Comedy Slices #13

Art & Culture

This week the comedy slice is delving into some highbrow comedy in a vain attempt to ignore the threats of snow and the rising sense of panic at the lack of presents brought. Let’s push away those thoughts,  C-Day is still weeks and weeks away, plenty of time for panic buys so let’s focus on this upcoming week’s comedy..

Trevor Noah
Trevor Noah is a South African comic, the son of a Black African mother and White Swiss Father, who grew up in South Africa during the Apartheid. He obviously has a unique perception of race – not any people can say that their birth was a crime, not sounding like a barrel of laughs so far… but it is this insight with sharp wit and intelligent observations that forms the basis of Noah’s comedy. And boy does it work. His show ‘The Racist’ was brought to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival by Eddie Izzard and had a sell-out season. Now at The Soho Theatre the show’s success is not showing any signs of quelling.

Thursday 13th Dec, Soho Theatre, £15 – £25 (SOLD OUT but try the box office)

Robin Ince
Robin Ince is the master of the strange concoction that is comedy/science. His BBC Radio 4 show with Brian Cox, ‘The Infinite Monkey Cage’, is a continuous success and if you have yet to experience that intellectual adventure you really need to. Ince’s show Happiness Through Science is a comic exploration of the human condition and asks the age old question – can you be happy and rational at the same time? Thought provoking and exactly what you need to shake away Christmas panic.

Friday 8th December, Canada Water Culture Space, £10

Knock2Bag Westside w/  Tony Law, Ed Gamble, Tom Davis, Richard Todd and Daniel Simonsen
Missed out on last week’s Knock2Bag at RichMix? Yeah you missed out on the likes of Cardinal Burns and Sara Pascoe but get over it. Knock2Bag is bringing the comedy Westside (again) with an incredibly line-up that includes the kooky comic Tony Law, Ed Gamble, Tom Davis, Richard Todd and Daniel Simonsen. Early bird tickets are still on sale and at only a FIVER you could even treat someone else to the show.  Smooth.

Wednesday 12th December, Bar FM, Early Bird Tickets £5

Don's Bah Humbug Comedy Show
Go on then, we will have a grudging nod to the festive season with my last pick of this week's comedy slice – Don's Bah Humbug Comedy Show.  Don Ward, the owner of The Comedy Store presents the store's regulars in this annual festive show. This year’s line-up include Ian Stone, Paul Thorne, Paul Tonkinson, Charlie Baker and one of my current favourites Abandoman. If you dislike Abandoman that you are pretty much an human anomaly clearly lacking in the ability to find anything humorous.

Monday 10th December, The Comedy Store, £15
