Blood Orange Returns With ’90s New Jack Swing Direction

Music

The new track from Dev Hynes is a skillfully executed homage to the 90s New Jack Swing that made stars of the likes of Bell Biv Devoe and BoysIIMen. Complete with cheeky scratch samples, sharpened hand claps, oozing sax solo, and Dev emoting like he's channeling a young DeVante SwingSandra's Smile may well be the best thing Hynes has done since writing Solange Knowles' minor global hit Losing You back in 2012.

The track has also gone on sale today, and has been accompanied by Dev announcing he's to play a charity show at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, NYC on December 12th. Donating profits from ticket sales to the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music, Hynes had the following to say:

“Playing music saved my life; if it wasn't for the chance to play cello or piano when I was a kid growing up in Essex, I shudder to think where I'd be right now. At this point in my life, all that matters to me is giving back to communities and making people happy, so I have decided to put on a fun night of performances at the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem that is hopefully affordable to all, with all proceeds going to the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music.  New York City, let's have some fun!"
