Playlist: Music To Cut Hair To with Lulu LeVay

Music

Good friend, good taste and mega brain, I introduce you to Lulu LeVay and now with added title ‘Dr’. I asked Lulu to do a playlist for a a few years ago and it never saw the light of day…..until now.

So here it is with a little update and a killer of a Q&A. One of my favourite questions is who would play you in a film.

Let's just say I fell of my chair with laughter.

Thank you for you patience Lulu and congratulations on your forthcoming book. Super chuffed for you darling…

When were you at your happiest?

The happiest day of my life (so far) has to be when I passed my PhD viva. The feeling was surreal. Four years of hard work and pulling my hair out finally paid off. It was quite magical.

What’s your greatest fear?

The world sliding backwards into an atmosphere of racial tension, like the 1970s, and a rise in hate crime. Oh, that’s already happened!

Who do you admire?

My friends who have got through – or are coping with – difficult times, whether that be cancer, loss, divorce, or depression. These people are my heroes.

What trait do you deplore in yourself/ other people?

Sometimes I’m too judgemental, too quickly, and I have no patience whatsoever. I hate queuing and want things done NOW. In other people? Littering.

What’s your worst habit?

According to past boyfriends, I talk too much in the mornings.

Favourite word?

Love.

Who would you like to say sorry to?

There are quite a few people in my younger past I’d like to apologise to for being a bit of a dick to, but we learn when we get older. Mostly, I’d like to say sorry to myself, for being so self-critical to. Takes maturity to understand how to self-love.

Who do you despise?

Donald Trump.

Who or what is the love of your life?

I love my friends. I am so lucky to have such wonderful mates. I also love music. Without music my life would be meaningless. It’s the driving force in my body.

What would improve your life?

I’m a high achiever, and I put too much pressure on myself to be perfect, which I’m not, which is OK! My life will be a lot better once I’m able to accept myself – warts and all – and stop trying so hard to improve myself.

What’s your greatest achievement?

My forthcoming book Surrogacy and the Reproduction of Normative Family on TV which is due out on Palgrave in 2019. It’s literally a dream come true.

What keeps you awake at night?

DJing! Usually I’m getting home from a gig at 4am…

How would you like to be remembered?

As a good friend, a good laugh in the pub, interesting to talk to – and devastatingly attractive, obvs.

What lessons has life taught you?

Not to be a cunt to people – treat people how you'd like to be treated. Be the best person you possibly can.

What would your super power be?

Erase poverty, social inequality and illness globally.

Favourite smell?

Freshly mown grass. Reminds me of being a kid.

Who would play you in a film?

Pat Butcher.

Tell us a secret?

I’m not really Larry Levan’s long lost cousin…
