Playlist: Music To Cut Hair To With Heavenly Recordings

Music

Talk about extracting teeth for a bloody playlist. People in hospital, going on holiday and working! How dare they?!

Having moved in to my new studio space I quickly found out that Heavenly Records were on the floor below me.

First thought: Trouble. Good trouble obvs..
Second thought: Mustn’t spend too much time loitering on the 3rd floor…
Third thought: They’ll do a jolly good playlist for my ‘music to cut hair to’

After a small bribe of fringe trims and red wine they very kindly answered the Q&A and put together a stonking playlist.

So here it is…..From the lovely Heavenly Recordings…

When were you at your happiest?

We’re never far from a collective shared experience that leaves us grinning ear to ear.  The most recent being our Heavenly weekend at The Trades Club in Hebden Bridge.  Too many highlights to mention but the big hitter was King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard fresh from a sell out show at Brixton Academy playing to a room of 250 fans bouncing off the walls, dancing on shoulders and crowd surfing.  Crazy scenes.  If that wasn’t enough the support was the debut performance from 77:78 a new project from Aaron and Tim from The Bees.  It’s been a long time coming but seeing them step up and hit out of the park with a set full of instant classics was quite a moment.

What’s your greatest fear?

The erosion of civil liberties.

Who do you admire?

Would it be weird to say the Nottingham Forest football team from 78-80 managed by Brian Clough and Peter Taylor?  We're not even into football as a label but Jeff grew up in Nottingham and still has a soft spot for the team.  Check out the brilliant documentary 'I Believe In Miracles' and you'll see what I mean.  Killer soundtrack too with music from the time.  A team effort where the unbelievable happened, you couldn't make it up.  Watch it, even if you don't like football, like us.

What trait do you deplore in other people?

Greed.

What’s your worst habit?

Overdoing it on the first night  … losing things, quite often they’re connected.

Favourite word?

Daisy and Diva’s new favourite word is Smoko.  They like a good smoko.

Who would you like to say sorry to?

Regrets? We’ve had a few. But then again, too few to mention.

Who do you despise?

Anyone who abuses a position of power

Who or what is the love of your life?

Friends, family, label.  Thankfully we’re very good at combining all three on a regular basis.

What would improve your life?

Windows that open in the office.

What’s your greatest achievement?

We’ve managed to keep the label going for 28 years and counting despite having gone through some really tough times, we also managed to blag an office back in our spiritual home of Soho which deserves a special mention to Mandy and Nick at the Mill Project and Wil @ RSN whose viewing we originally snuck in on.  We’ve made it to a point where today we found out that we’ve got a Cornish language dream pop record by the Welsh artist Gwenno on the A-list at 6music.  I’m saying that’s a great achievement although credit does really need to go to Gwenno and our radio pluggers Coolbadge.

What keeps you awake at night?

Sobriety and an early night.

How would you like to be remembered?

Our discography can do the talking.

What lessons has life taught you?

Never work with c*nts.

What would your super power be?

Distribute wealth fairly. I can’t see DC or Marvel picking up upon that one though.

Favourite smell?

Underground car parks.  The Algerian coffee store on Old Compton St.

Who would play you in a film?

Vic & Bob.

Tell us a secret?

Magic exists.
