Placid One: The Ransom Note Records Mix

Music

Out this Friday 21st July, our next release on Ransom Note Records is the C Balloon EP, courtesy of immensely talented young Belgian producer Maximilien Vincent, aka Placid One. Three wonderful tracks that combine youthful exuberance with a yearning for the hardware mentasm of early Brit pioneers, plus remixes from Cass. and Timothy 'Heretic' Clerkin.

Placid One has also turned in this brilliant mix for us, which takes you on a percussion-led journey through different refractions of the bass spectrum. From Alex Coulton and Addison Groove to Hodge and Skee Mask, dig in below, and read our Q&A with Placid One:

Please introduce yourself… who are you, where are you, what are you?

Hi it's Maximilien Vincent aka Placid One. I'm a Belgian DJ/producer from Ciney.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

I think a wild African forest would be great.

What should we be wearing?

Nothing!

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

A sweet pepper.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A baboon!

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

I really like all these tracks… but I think 'Kordman Return' by Skee Mask is my favourite. This guy is a main source of ideas for me.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Ricardo Villalobos just because it's Ricardo.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track you start on I think. I often begin a mix with an ambient / beatless track and then let percussions from the second track appear.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First was Syro by the master (Aphex Twin). The last was Hi Scores by Boards of Canada.

How does your brain work when making music? How does it work when you aren't?

I'm like a child when I'm making music. I need to make music, it's really a way to externalise my feelings and my state of mind.

What are you obsessed with at the moment?

Percussions. I listen to a lot of tribal / African music at the moment.

Anything else we need to discuss?

Internet memes? Lol. No, I just want to thank all the Ransom Note team!!!
