Marvin & Guy – The ‘Shine A Light On’ Ransom Note Mix

Music

When two men come together to make sweet music (Where are you going with this? – Ed.) it can result in some of the most glorious sounds known to mankind. As this mix from Marvin & Guy oozes into your ears as smoothly as a shaved apple, our light beams from the rooftops of R$N towers, through the storms and directly onto the pair as we seek out as much information as we can from the pair. Of course, things get a little 'off-beat' but you've got a peach of a mix to thrill your ears as you power on through.

Go on then, get this down you;

Who are you, what are and where are you?

We are just two guys who really love good food and we are answering to this from the beach.

Are you the close cousins of toni & guy?

We guess not but we would like to have their money for sure 🙂

Your latest release was a departure from your homegrown disco sound, did your musical flower bloom with a different blossom?

We started with disco because it's inside our DNA. Marcello owns a huge collection of disco, soul and italo disco records (almost 10.000). Later we realised that our "groovy" taste could fit perfectly with these new techno wave… So our "groovy techno" was born 🙂

What are you wearing right now?

Just a swimming costume.

Do you enjoy hats?

We really love hats, we’re trying to launch a collaboration with a fashion designer we know but this is a secret 😉

What is your number one 'the next day' track?

Lee Perry – Disco Devil.

Your bio says that you have moved towards the 'indie dance' light. Was this a conscious move or is that just where your music took you to? Are you able to explain what “indie dance” really means?

We are not. So we can say that it happened randomly.

If your music was mcdonalds meal, what would it comprise of and why?

We’re Italians, the country of food, we can’t talk about McDonald things or someone might shoot us right now.

How should we be listening to marvin & guy?

Totally under a palm tree, watching a flamingo and feeling the breeze of the sea.

What does dancing mean to your music?

Dancing means everything for us, we pay particular attention to that.

What is your all time favourite film?

Mulholland Drive by David Lynch.

What is your set up like?

We are very simple guys: a mixer, 2 turntables, 2 cd players, a flamingo, 1 Roland tr-808 and a couple of Hawaiian dancers.

When will we see you again?

We will re-start everything (releases, important collaborations and touring hard) from September.

Anything else we should know about you?

We would like to be flamingos. Just in case you still didn’t get that 🙂

Onto the mix…

Where was the mix recorded?

At Marcello’s place in Lanzarote while we were watching the waves of the sea.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Some punching headphones. You can feel the vibes more intensely.

What should we be wearing?

A swimming costume. And definitely a hat.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: location/system/format?

We really love live recording during a party and we would love to have them every time on cassette to collect.

Which track in the mix is your current favorite?

Yard – Waves of Love.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

The last night of Larry Levan at Paradise Garage back in 1987 and Merlin Bob with Timmy Regisford at WBMX Radio in 1988.

If you could go back to back with any dj from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Larry Levan, we don’t need to explain why I think.

What was your first dj set up at home and what is it now?

It was a 2 channel mixer and 2 turntables. Actually we change it very often, it depends.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The last track is one of the most important parts of the set.

What were the first and last records you bought?

The first comes from Marcello, back in 1993: Hardrive – Deep Inside.
The last comes from Alessandro: a very nice Combinado Volume 1.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Hot pepper mixed with some pineapple flavour.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A red panda. (or flamingo if you prefer eheh)

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Tullio de Piscopo – Drums In The Air.

Upcoming in the world of marvin & guy?

We can say a couple of things:
Remixes for Zombies In Miami, Vox Low, Selvagem and other 2 friends we can’t actually say.
A double sided vinyl with very dark edits from us, J.T., I.S. And T.J. (we would like to keep these big names secret for the moment:) )
Our first tour in the US and Mexico (so excited!)
And other huge original releases in the next months.

Anything else we need to discuss?

Can we discuss flamingos?
