Markus Gibb: The ‘Monday Is Okay’ Mix

Music

Markus Gibb and friends run Rock To The Beat, French based slo-mo and electro label which has featured several times in R$N over the past year. He now steps up to the Monday Mix tape and we ask him some fun and slightly impertinent questions in return. Give the set a listen below, then find out a bit more from the man himself…

Who are you, where are you and what are you?

I'm Markus Gibb, a Producer/ Dj who's living in Lyon, France. I run a label called Rock To The Beat records with two friends, Steve Ekman and Noar Wald (founders of the label). I released music on labels such Kill The Dj (Lumière Noire's collection), Magic Feet, Clouded Vision,…

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

It's a mix of different styles… I like Italo Disco, industrial music, cold wave, ambient music, psyche rock, …
(I did a painting…)

What role has ambient music played in your life and musical career to date?

It inspires me..makes me feel a better guy in life.

Are you still based in Lyon? How would you describe the musical landscape of the city?

I'm living in Lyon since two years.
The musical landscape : Awesome. There's lots of terrific places like Le Sucre, Terminal Club, Le Sonic,… to listen good electronic and rock music. Lots of crews, labels, parties every week.. And a huge festival : "Les Nuits Sonores"

What was the early inspiration behind Rock To The Beat Records?

Are you on the same wavelength as the Boomtown Rats or do you actually like Mondays?

I like Mondays. A new start, a new episode.

Who got you hooked on electronic music?

Bands like Animal Collective, boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, T. Raumschmiere, Kraftwerk.

Who would you say are your biggest influences and what are you hoping to achieve with your music?

I think my biggest influence is Anton Newcombe. Not only for music..but this guy was a huge inspiration for me.

What were your original aspirations as musicians and how do you think you're shaping up?

At the beginning I wanted to be a rock star.. and today, I'm not.
