Hysteric: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix

Music

Ah, who doesn't love the sweet sweet sound of Italo music on a Wednesday afternoon? Hysteric is the man behind one of Australia's finest musical outputs, Mothball Records. Over the years they have been responsible for reissuing some of the finest forgotten rarities from Italo history: this year saw them re-release the highly sought after Plustwo EP.

Hysteric himself has amassed a fearsome reputation as a disc jockey and has released music on labels such as Germany's Public Possession, Ostra Discos and Mysidian. His sets are orientated towards the dancefloor without compromise: euphoric, energetic and electronically mesmerizing they see him cover a range of genres and styles as he presents subtle hidden gems alongside party classics. The tail end of this month will see him kickstart an international tour which spans across Europe, Israel and the UK. Thus we asked him to contribute to our ever expansive mix series, and boy did he deliver. Listen below:

Who are you, where are you and what are you?

I'm George Hysteric, based in Melbourne, Australia.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us? (An image from the old internet is acceptable…)

Edits are important to you as a DJ and producer, how do you source your samples?

It's not really a conscious decision, to go looking for samples/edits, it's more if I hear something and think I could do something with it. For that reason, it takes me quite some time to come up with new music.

Where was the mix recorded?

In my music room at home.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

I'd like to think it works as a good headphone mix and also as a pre-party mix

What would be your dream setting to record a mix?

Anywhere with minimal distractions.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Right now I love the track from Andreas Gehm – 'I Don't Dare' – actually this one didn't hit me until I already had the record for some time. Sadly he passed away earlier this year, RIP.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Tie between I-f – 'Mixed Up in the Hague 2' and Flemming Dalum – 'Lost in the Fog & Strobe'.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

In general I'm not crazy on playing back to back unless I know the person really well.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

It's really the same since I started, nothing fancy: 2x 1200 and a basic Vestax 2 channel mixer, simple but reliable.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Well every track in the mix is important to me, but normally the 1st and last tracks are chosen because I want them in the mix and they don't fit anywhere else OR have a good intro/outro part.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First….. Player [1] – 'Space Invaders' from a church fete when I was 6

Last….. Robert Turman – 'Way Down' …crazy industrial frog music

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

There's a lot that are impossible to beat mix (at least for me) but always they will complement something else as a blend or whatever.

What's coming up in the world of Hysteric?

I'll do this tour, then will be two edit 12"s out (one on Violette Szabo, one on Plasir Partage), following that some Mothball releases and probably again tour Europe March/April 2017.

Anything else we need to discuss?

That's it, thanks for your support!
