Hardbody: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix

Music

Hardbody is one of our favourite London nights. Currently based at The Waiting Room and focused on left-of-centre electronic music, they've hosted acts such as Autarkic, Elena Colombi, Moscoman and Vladimir Ivkovic since launching in April 2016. Main man Chris Tarbet has put together this brilliant mix for us in order to showcase some of the sounds of the party, and you'd be well advised to stop whatever you're doing and stick it on right now. Listen here and read the Q&A below:

Please introduce yourself… who are you, where are you and what are you?

Chris Tarbet. Current Location: Whitechapel. Current state: solid matter.

Can you show us what your music sounds like?

What was the original inspiration behind the parties?

Nothing more than the pursuit of a decent knees up.

In five words, describe running parties in London?

Not for the faint hearted.

Where was the mix recorded?

In my living room with a Twix and a tea.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Sat in an armchair, smoking.

What should we be wearing?

Just socks and an air of opulence.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix?

Exactly where I am now but with a better mixer. I've been eyeing up the Mastersounds Radius for a while.
…as a live mix, I've never had the chance to play ambient records out so DJing at a club that's open all weekend and has a separate area where people can relax or sleep would be fun.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

That Black Merlin remix of The Asphodells 'Skwatch' is pretty powerful. There's a rework of Brian Eno's 'In Dark Trees' by Katia & Marielle Labèque that I like a lot too.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Of all time is a long time but Vladimir Ivkovic's mix for Manfredas' SMALA series regularly gets a visit.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

It started with a pair of CDJ400s and a beaten up Behringer. It's now CDJ400s, 1210s and a beaten up Behringer.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

That's all about context but for this mix every track got equal measures.

What were the first and last records you bought?

I have no idea what the first record I bought was, last one was 33.10.3402 – Mecanica No. 1 on L.I.E.S, a track off it is in this mix.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Croque Monsieur.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A bothered frog.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

There's always a way, although I've got a pretty rough Ashtray Navigations record that struggles into most things.

Upcoming in the world of Hardbody….

winter hibernation then possibly something new and not club related in 2018. And more parties here and there.

Anything else we need to discuss?

I'm all ears. Thank you R$N, hope you enjoy the mix.
