Cuts: The ‘Monday Is Okay’ Mix

Music

Composer/filmmaker Anthony Tombling Jr aka CUTS is set to release music from his 2015 experimental film EXIST for the first time. A dual EP release later this month on Village Green Recordings will precede his debut album for the label.

Inspired both by an H.P. Lovecraft poem and a car crash that CUTS was in, the 40-minute film explores the themes of night terrors and sleep paralysis, and features narration from cult graphic novelist Alan Moore.

To celebrate the release of EXIST 1 and EXIST 2 on 27th April, CUTS has turned in this rather excellent Monday mixtape for us. (We know it's Tuesday but give us a break, we're still recovering from the Bank Holiday!) Featuring music from The Field, Sepalcure and Elite Gymnastics, get stuck in below:

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

I am CUTS, I am home, I am human.

What does your music sound like?

In my head it sounds like the soundtrack to an unmade film.

Tell us about the Monday mixtape you’ve put together for us.

It’s a bit of an eclectic racket, from drone ambience to techno, dubstep and a bit of shoegaze. The mix opens and ends with tracks by Second Woman and Belong, the projects of composer / producer Turk Dietrich. The rest of the mix contains a few oldies such as Seefeel, Danton Eeprom and some recent stuff I've been listening to like the Justin Walter track. The CUTS track that’s in there is an old one from a 40 minute film installation I did for The Dark Outside and Submerge festivals.

If it were to be drawn what would it look like?

Erratic circular scribbling.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

On your back, in a cave.

Where was it recorded?

At home, staring out the window.

Who got you hooked on electronic music?

I wouldn’t say I was hooked on any genre of music in particular but I guess my interest in electronic music probably comes from listening to Kraftwerk, Eno, Krautrock, Detroit techno and stuff like that.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First record I bought was Promises by the Buzzcocks. Last record I bought was Unseen Forces by Justin Walter.

What are you obsessed with at the moment?

Iceland. Not the frozen food specialist, the country. I’m going there at the end of the month.

EXIST 1 + EXIST 2 are out 27th April on Village Green Recordings.
