Braqueberry: The Wednesday Alternative Mix

Music

Now it's time to switch it up a little. On a Wednesday we like to try things a little differently. This time around we feature Braqueberry, a producer with many faces. However, this time around we feature him under an alias in which he focusses upon juke, footwork and bass as he steps up to deliver an electrifying assortment of sound and frequencies.

Coming in at fifty minutes he blends juke alongside fast paced cuts reminiscent of his hip hop past. Earlier this year saw him release an EP on a label titled Iberian Juke, a fitting appearance for Braqueberry from Barcelona.

Listen and read the interview below:

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?

It’s Braqueberry, based in Barcelona. Married to Juke now, divorced from HipHop, flirting with anything leftfield, bassy or clubby.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Where was the mix recorded?

Recorded at my holiday spot by the beach in Costa Brava.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

I would rather have you listen to it without checking your phone or computer for 50 minutes. It’s so hard now, just to not do anything but one thing at a time. I would just advise you to do so, I try everyday.

What should we be wearing?

My new pants bought in Estonia 2 weeks ago. Check my picture on this page

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

The old days with my Akiyama (spanish faulty brand) belt turntable, my Akiyama mixer, and my old Pentium III PC. Would love to go back to that for a day.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

All the Foodman 食品まつり tunes are really good, though not danceable in a standard fashion, but hey, the dude is a genius IMHO. Also the intro is by some experimental Orquestra from the Andes in Bolivia, dated 1980. Supergood spacey stuff.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Not an expert on mixes. That I can recall now, maybe some of those Massive Attack old dj mixes released on CD 15 years ago, so eclectic and so enjoyable. The first Jackmasters’ mixes also blew my mind back in 2009.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Some more blurred memories come to mind, old Hype and Zinc True Playaz sets in Barcelona some hot night in 99. I’m an old person hahaha.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

That was it, the Akiyama thing mentioned previously. Bought some Gemini turntables too, would grab a pair of XDJs soon as well as the barcelona-made Taula mixer, only if I could afford that.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Try to have some ambience-atmo tracks both ends, I believe in the narrative, the active listener and the loud volume either on speakers or headphones.

What were the first and last records you bought?

Started buying all my hardcore collection, Black Flag and Minor Threat stuff, switched to Hip Hop, now I mostly buy oldies and rare-stuff. Got my last one in Helsinki, some Japanese drumming stuff recorded direct-to-disc style on an on-location session in some remote Japanese island. Pretty much blew my mind in terms of audiophilia, all about enjoying beautiful sounds being recorded carefully.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Uncooked and spicy like Ceviche and a Chilcano long-drink, that's top-notch stuff we have on this planet.

If it was an animal what would it be?

That wary hedgegog I met once at the Amsterdam Zoo.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Yeah, the japanese drumming thing, I might have to chop that up and turn it into an EP, either this or wetransfer it to Foodman ; )

Upcoming in the world of…

Dropped a couple of unreleaseds at the end of the mix, work on some more and get them released.

Anything else we need to discuss?

We need to discuss many things, especially shitty politics, I would go for that shit, beer in hand, anytime, like anybody would, errrrr….
