Bobby Pleasure: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Christmas Mix

Music

Friends are the best right? We all love friends.

Well Bobby Pleasure is one of ours, an all round good bloke from Essex to just so happens to know a thing or two about records. As a label manager and DJ he has more experience than most and this year has seen him appear around the globe at the likes of Mareh in Brazil and in Ibiza this summer. When he offered to deliver us a christmas mix we certainly knew it wouldn't be typical, the dude wasn't built for the cold. The result is pretty special indeed as he delivers an hour of lovely groove orientated house with a sun kissed feel. Oh, and some seasonal samples of course. Listen to the mix and read the interview below:

Please introduce yourself…

My name is Bobby Pleasure

Who are you, where are you and what are you?

I’m a DJ, producer & record label manager currently residing in London, whilst acting and behaving like a human because that’s what ‘they’ want us to believe

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Describe the term 'balearic’?

Balearism is a way of life. There is no chemical equation or words to explain it. You can’t bottle it up or fake it. It just is. And in the end I have no doubts that everyone is going to fully realise that.

Where is the best place you have played this year?

I played on a little island called Boipeba off the coast of Brazil at the beginning of January. That was proper dead nice.

Where was the mix recorded?

In my mind on this new software called Brainmix. It’s really easy to get the hang of and super fun to use. You should try it.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Well with it being so close to Christmas I’ve gone for a bit of a festive theme, so i would like you to be close to an open fire, with people you really care about, sipping on a nice warm alcoholic beverage. Maybe like a mulled wine or hot toddy or something?

What should we be wearing?

An elf hat. One with the little ears. They’re my favourite Christmas attire.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location, system, format?

One day I would really love to record one at the Ransom Note head office in London. That would truly be a dream come true. Please make it happen Santa.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

I’m not allowed to say what my favourite is as it’s currently unreleased and top secret but second fave would be Project Pablo – Enough. New one on Clone Royal Oak and the whole EP is pretty damn fly. Shouts to Pablo if you out there homie.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

I think DJ Koze’s last few mixes have been pretty spectacular in terms of their selection and arrangement. Very inspiring. Tough to pick one but I’m going to go with the Fader mix as i think that’s the one which really grabbed me by the balls the most when i first heard it. It’s a toss up between that and the Bobby Pleasure Feel My Bicep mix which you should totally check out if you haven’t already…

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

At the risk of sounding like a bit of a fanboy I’d probably say Koze again. My DJ sets are quite eclectic and fun and he has a similar vibe. So Kosi if you reading this bro I’m ready – hit me up. Truly yours, your biggest fan, this is Stan.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

My first meandering into deejaying actually came in the form of a Homemix CD setup when I was about 12. Which is amusingly shit. It was like a mobile DJ thing that I would take to family parties to ‘rock the house'. I would have my nan losing her shit in the living room. Current set up in the gaff is just 1210’s and an Allen & Heath mixer.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Thats a tough one, they're equally important and I’m a pretty indecisive guy. But in the spirit of good editorial I’m going to make a decision and go with the first. First impressions being the most important and all that…

What were the first and last records you bought?

First was from my local record shop Crazy Beat which you’ve actually featured on the site – respect. Last was Discogs – ooooh how interesting!

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

If I’m totally honest I reckon it would taste a bit like a Christmas dinner. But I don’t eat meat so this is the veggie option I’m afraid.

If it was an animal what would it be?

I’m gonna stay festive and go with a reindeer. And I’m going to call it Steffan.

Upcoming in the world of…

I’m going skiing at the weekend. Then next week I’ve got my beautiful girlfriends 30th birthday and after that I’m the best man at my best mates wedding. So it’s all go in the festive world of Bobby P. Then Christmas…..then New Years…dear God where does it all end?

Anything else we need to discuss?

Probably a bit deep for this interview but I just read an Elon Musk’s theory that we are all living in a computer simulation of a future civilisation it’s really fucking with my head. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone!! I love youuuuu!!!! xxxx
