Insomnia Music with Gigi Masin

Venetian producer Gigi Masin has earned himself cult status in the ambient world in recent years. Although his compositions and collaborations date back to 1986, his work slipped somewhat under the radar at the time, later gaining wider recognition with the release of Talk To The Sea, a retrospective of Gigi's work over the last 30 years released on Music From Memory.

Alongside his individual exploits, Gigi makes up part of Gaussian Curve with Young Marco and Jonny Nash, making their acclaimed debut in 2014 with Clouds on Music From Memory, which was followed up by a second album in 2017. His collaborative efforts also extend to his work with Luciano Ermondi and Paolo Mazzacani of Tempelhof, who together released two records for Italian label Hell Yeah.

His new album, set for release on 28th Febraury, takes inspiration from the mythical Greek island of Ogygia and its alleged real life counterpart Gavdos, a place that had a huge impact on Gigi when he first visited. Set for release on Apollo Records, Gigi is in great company with Aphex Twin’s ‘Selected Ambient Works 85 – 92’, Biosphere’s ‘Microgravity’ and ‘Patashnik’ all making homes on the R&S sub-label.

Taking inspiration from the night for today's playlist, Gigi picks his favourite musical selections for the midnight hours…

"I’m a nocturnal animal, somewhat between an owl or a frog. There’s a peace in the cracks of the night that makes it magic, an unknown friendly territory where dreams and fantasy have boundless expanses. An open window when it’s too hot for my new headphones, trying to give a name to every star above, the dim light of my cigarette and nothing to mention except to repeat her name a dozen times with every passing car. There’s a lot of people who wake up early to see the sunrise but it is the long work of the night that can make it special."
