Peckham, what's good?

It seems as though London's South has rocketed into the stratosphere in recent years given the number of promising young artists emerging from the area. Henry Wu is one of many artists born and raised on the other side of the river, having released music on the likes of Eglo, Rhythm Section and Bronswood he seems to be leading a charmed existence, very few artists have the capability to churn out music at a similar pace. Collaborations with the likes of K15 and Yussef Dayes have helped him develop personally as a musician whilst external influences, faith and an environment conducive for creativity has helped along the way.

We caught up with Henry Wu to talk influences on the eve of his new release for Eglo Records. See below…

The Qur'an - Surah Al Hadid (Recited By Idris Abkar)

As a kid growing up I always felt I had a faith in god. 6 years ago I found my faith in Islam. Reading the Qur’an changed my life.

  • Ahmad Jamal - Dolphin Dance

Always listen to this album when I’m on move, and travelling etc. Ahmad Jamal was way ahead of his time and you can hear so many producers who have sampled this record.

  • Akira Kurosawa-Seven Samurai

Seven Samurai is a Japanese film from 1954. It’s a historical drama direcred by Akira Kurosawa. It’s takes place in 1586 during the Sunegoku Period of Japanese history. The story is about a village that hire seven Samurai to help them fight off bandits that keep raiding their village. It’s a masterpiece.

  • Herbie Hancock - Butterfly

It’s on an album called Thrust which was released in 1974. Again way before I was born. On Columbia records. Mike Clark on drums and Herbie on keys. Butterfly is one of those timeless tunes.

  • Southside Allstars - Southside Riddim

Simply it’s where I’m from. You have to get back to base. It’s where my family is, it’s where I grew up. Simple..
