Wasteman’s ‘Tracks That Made Me Love Moodymann’

Music

Moodymann (or KDJ to his mates) is the best DJ in the history of the universe. That’s a fact. I know because of science. Why is he the best DJ in the history of the universe? Well, I can tell you but I’d have to kill you. Actually not really, he’s the best because he makes you want to dance. So many DJ’s these days are so busy playing the very latest tunes and looking like they’re about to ask you if you need any help at Urban Outfitters that they have forgotten the vital ingredient of a good set: fun.

Moodymann always provides this in droves, mixing house and techno but also classic funk, hip hop and disco to perfection, not giving a fuck if he’s playing the latest bass heavy drops but giving a fuck that the crowd is smiling.

Here; in celebration of his upcoming show for Hydra, I have picked a few of the tunes that KDJ has played in sets that I’ve seen over the years that have instantly made me drop what I was doing a run up to the booth so I can ask ‘what the fuck was that?’ like my life depended on it.

You can find Moodymann getting everyone excited at The Hydra: Electric Minds x Kompakt on Saturday 8th November.

Talc - Robots Return

This reminds me of Moodymanns set at Worldwide in 2012. He dropped this banger whilst
playing the Ampitheatre stage and had J Dillas mum there. Fact.

  • Patrice Rushen - Haven't You Heard

KDJ topped the bill for the Three Chairs night in Vauxhall late in 2013. My mates got kicked out
before he got there because the bouncers thought they had md on them when really they were
just looking shady in the smoking area, which is a shame because when he dropped this it was
    absolute fire.

  • Moodymann - Mahogany Brown

Moodymann is not only a DJ good enough to make swarms of sweaty humans ask him what tunes he’s playing, but also a top notch producer as well. A lot of his stuff is warm, drifitng jazzy house that you can listen to whilst making a top notch stew, or slow cooking a shoulder of pork.

  • Got To Give It Up - Marvin Gaye

This is a classic Moodymann drop that will frequently get played out. I mean, it’s fucking Marvin Gaye for a start, but also who is really playing this kind of ‘fuck queuing for a warm Red Stripe I need to dance to this RIGHT NOW’ tune anymore? Not Tiesto, that’s for sure.

  • Slum Village - Disco (Original Version)

Although he predominantly plays more high tempo dance music, Moodymanns not averse to cracking out a classic Hip Hop banger, which is nice for the punters so they can let their sweat patches die down a bit before trying their next hug. As previously mentioned, KDJ likes to bring J Dillas mum around with him, and J Dilla is the patron saint of hip hop production who used to bless Slum village tracks with his Midas touch.

  • House Of Jazz - Lose My Mind (Urgent Music Work)

Another KDJ fave. Listen to how smooth that sounds. He plays this regularly in his sets as a little pick me up after slowing the crowd down.
