8 Tracks: Of Memories With Need2soul

Music

The rather sad news broke a couple of months back that Need2Soul would be hosting two final parties at fabric following fifteen years of fun. The long running London based party series has played host to some of the biggest names in dance music including the likes of Juan Atkins, Ron Trent, Theo Parrish and many more. Alex announced the closure of the party in September and revealed two parties scheduled to take place in the coming months. The first of these parties will feature Body & Soul, the dynamic supergroup comprised of Danny Krivit, Joe Claussell and Francois K on the 3rd of December.

In celebration and honour of the series we invited the man behind the foundations of one of London's most significant parties to select eight tracks…

Pepe Bradock - Deep Burnt

This is a special track for Need2Soul it’s one of the classics that has been played over and over at the parties, this record reminds me of this special moment at the Key club, when Kerri Chandler, DJ Deep and Rich Medina were playing back to back… DJ deep dropped Deep Burned and Kerri was playing keys over it while Rich was doing his spoken word thing, the crowd went crazy!

  • Pepe Bradock - Deep Burnt

This is a special track for Need2Soul it’s one of the classics that has been played over and over at the parties, this record reminds me of this special moment at the Key club, when Kerri Chandler, DJ Deep and Rich Medina were playing back to back… DJ deep dropped Deep Burned and Kerri was playing keys over it while Rich was doing his spoken word thing, the crowd went crazy!

  • Tulio De Piscopo - Stop Bajon Original 12 Inch Version 1984

This became a dance floor classic by being played over and over in Chicago by the likes of Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles. It’s a special jam for Need2Soul as Glenn Underground often plays it as the last track of the night, probably as a tribute to me, being an Italian tune.

  • Tortured Soul - I Might Do Something Wrong (Yoruba Main Mix)

This was a big tune on the scene when it first came out, at the time nobody even knew that it was a live band….Tortured Soul is a group that holds a special place in Need2soul’s heart! we launched them in the UK in 2002, a small gig at Cargo on a Sunday with about 500 people there. The atmosphere was electrifying! The guys were so tight and nobody had ever experienced anything like it! A live house band at the time was so unique. they played Need2soul many times over the years and always put on an amazing show.

  • Inner Life - Ain't No Mountain High Enough (Larry Levan Mix)

This Is a Body & Soul Classic, it’s been played at almost every Body & Soul event we’ve put on and the crowd absolutely loves it every time! We even had the Honour of having Jocelyn perform it live with her band at the last event. AMAZING!

  • Ron Trent - Altered States

This is the jam that propelled Ron to superstardom, he was only 14 years old when he made this. This record has been a constant fixture at Need2Soul events, very proud to have had Ron as a resident since the early days.

  • Peven Everett - I Can't Believe I Loved Her

This is my favourite Peven Everett piece of work and one of my all time favourite vocal house tunes. Peven really gets to show his genius with this… a long instrumental intro with Peven going crazy on keys then out of nowhere the vocal hits you like a ton of bricks towards the end, hearing this on a big system is an amazing experience. When this first came out you wouldn’t hear this mix often when you were out but, this is the one that got played most at Need2soul and it’s also my favourite.

  • Hardrive 2000 Feat Lynae - Never Forget When You Touch Me

This Release springs to mind as it’s both a Body & Soul and a Need2soul classic. It has this particular memory as the ”Encore” tune from Body & Soul at Oval Space in 2012, it was such an incredible, intense and hot night, this came on at the end when the lights were on and everybody lost their mind!!

  • Glenn Underground - Black Action

Another Need2soul resident, Chicago legend Glenn Underground! This is in my opinion one of GU’s finest works. With Glenn’s jazzy Keys and fine beats it has always got the Need2soul dancefloor into a frenzy, specially with the House dancers that have been coming over the years.
