8 Tracks: Of Inspiration From An Alternate Reality With Helmut Filter

Music

There is little available information about the mystical world of Helmut Filter. Robert Fischer is a German producer who has previously worked as part of both Fischer & Kleber and Mono Girl. Most recently he has begun focussing most prominently on his Helmut Filter project creating a sound which pays homage to his roots as a drummer. As a result there is an element of hypnotism to much of his musical works, value is found in deeply intrinsic grooves with subtle movement.

We invited him to contribute to our eight tracks series following a recent appearance on Kerosene.

See his selections below:

Aydin Essen - Reactants

Just an unpredictable & gloomy splash of colour by one of my favourite Jazz-Musicians, who’s work i’ve admired for years!

  • Aydin Essen - Reactants

Just an unpredictable & gloomy splash of colour by one of my favourite Jazz-Musicians, who’s work i’ve admired for years!

  • Daisuke Tanabe - Ghost

What I love about this tune, and Daisuke Tanabe’s music in general, is that it’s so magnificently produced, with so much care to detail, without ever taking itself to seriously!

  • Lb - Angie

I simply adore this outstanding version of the classic Stones-Track! With its artificial & mechanical beauty, to me this version depicts it’s unique image of Angie, who could as well be an android?

  • Dieter Scherf Trio - " Klänge Über Linie".

This psychedelic collage of expressive sound-splashes & it’s graphical visualization from 1973, comes not only as an inspiring piece of art, but holds a special place for me, not least because visionary Composer Dieter Scherf comes from my hometown and I got to know him personally!

  • Venetian Snares - "You Discovered The Secret And Juiced It For All Its Majesty"

This piece of music fascinates me! It feels like an invasion of unconformity, totally mechanical, but with it’s very own depiction of time & space!

  • The United States Of America "American Metaphysical Circus"

Released in 1968, this record, with this song in particular, was really ahead of it’s time! Especially in terms of production and the usage of effects T.u.s.o.A. pushed the boundaries of their time!

  • Autechre - Fold 4, Wrap 5

What a remarkable piece of music, with it’s unique but thought-provoking twist of time! Like a peaceful revolution against rationality!

  • Steve Reich - Music For 18 Musicians

Whenever I dive into this astonishing piece, it has an exceptional effect on me, sending my mind on a journey, far away from what one might consider everyday life!
Steve Reich’s work in general, comes as a great inspiration, not least because I still can’t really wrap my head around a lot of his work!
